1 * ® Reigh Count Scores a Brilliant Victory in Coronation Cup 3— 9 SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. EPSOM DOWNS. England, June 6.— Reigh Count, owned by Mr. and Mrs. John D. Hertz of Chicago, winner of the 1928 Kentucky Derby, and champion three-year-oid of America last year, today made amends for his three failures on the British turf by triumphing in brilliant fashion in the Coronation Cup, one mile and a half, over the game course traversed by the Epsom Derby field here yesterday. In defeating Athford, Reigh Count reversed the finish in the Newbury Spring Cup, which Athford won. Incidentally, the latter is a full brother to Trigo, winner of the Epsom Derby, and is owned by W. Barrett. Athford was the favorite among the nine starters, being held at 9 to 4, while Reigh Count was quoted at 10 to 1. Plantago, which finished third, was 5 to 1. Jockey W. Childs, King Georges rider, was substituted in place of "Chick" Lang, the American jockey, who accompanied Reigh Count to England. From an even start, Childs took Reigh Count back and did not make a move with the American horse until the last half mile, which is down hill. Athford began his move at the same time and it soon developed into a race between the Irish and American horses. In a driving finish, Reigh Count outstayed the Barrett colorbearer and won by a head. The first three to finish, Reigh Count, Athford and Plantago, all carried equal weights, 129 pounds each. This marked Reigh Counts fourth start in England and his first victory. He was sent to England primarily to win the Ascot Gold Cup, which, probably, will be his next start. He disappointed his admirers first in the Lingfield Handicap, then in the Newberry Spring Cup, and finally in the Jubilee Handicap at Kempton Park.
