i O Q, Rich Belmont Stakes May Attract Field of Thirteen Star Racers g « NFW YORK, N. Y., June 6.— On the eve of running the Belmont Stakes there appears to be an excellent chance of thirteen starters going to the post. This famous old one mile and a half test, to which the Westchester Racing Association adds 5,000, will have a value of something like 6,000, and the fact of its being over the mile and a half distance, at scale weights, makes it more closely resemble the Epsom Derby than any American race. , This year there Is a better chance for a stirring contest than in many years and there are so many of the eligibles that have been brought up to the race in splendid condition that it remains rather an open affair, though of course most of the interest will center about E. R. Bradleys Blue Larkspur, Withers Stakes winner, and George D. Wideners Jack High, the great rivals of last year. Since his defeat in the Withers Stakes, Jack High has demonstrated his readiness for the one mile and a half test, while the Bradley colt has also shown brilliant trials over the route. Then there is Dr. Freeland, winner of the Preakness Stakes, for Walter J. Salmon, that is greatly favored by the distance. T. J. Healey will saddle both this colt and African, which was third in the Preakness Stakes, under the silks of Richard T. Wilson. There is a doubt if Chestnut Oak, from the Oak Ridge Stable, will be sent to the posf, but he is at least a probability. His marvelous race in the Withers Stakes gave him a place, but it is generally thought the mile and a half will be beyond his powers. H. P. Whitneys Beacon Hill, while he has been something of a disappointment, showed good speed in his last race and there is little doubt of his starting. The others named as probable starters are less well known than these, but each has trained well for the great prize. Following is the probable field, together with the weights and probable riders : Horse. Wt. Jockey. Blue I.nrkspur 12G M. Garner Inck High 126 L. McAfee Dr. Freeland 126 R. Leonard African 120 L.
