Accounts for Capital City Pnrse, Stellar Attraction on Connaught Park Jockey Club Program. * OTTAWA, Ont., June 6. — Mineralogist, racing for Frank W. Callaghan, which recently suffered defeat by Harry C. Hatchs good sprinter French Lass, reversed that score when he accounted for the Capital City Purse, the best race on todays program at the Ayl-mer plant of the Connaught Park Jockey Club, before a good crowd of racing devotees. Third place fell to E. F. Sanfords Noine, while Patricia J., the only other starter, was a short distance back. The withdrawal of Campanini and Prompter left a quartet to race for honors in the feature, but this did not effect the contest, as the running brought about a stirring finish that kept the crowd on its toes from start to finish. French Lass was quickest to find her stride when the barrier was released, and she was hustled along by Townrow to set the pace, while Mineralogist was rushed up to offer contention. Patricia J., which was an overywhelming favorite, raced in third place, while Noine followed farther back. Leaving the back-stretch, Mineralogist was shaken up and Townrow also went to a drive on the Hatch starter. Mineralogist was not to be denied and gradually wore his rival down and, at the end, was going away to win by a half length, while French Lass was four lengths in advance of Noine. The winner ran the route in 1:14% over a dull track, the result of a slight sprinkling of rain that fell intermittently during the morning hours and during the afternoon. SKIRT A SURPRISE Skirt, racing for J. D. Harrison, caused a surprise in the initial offering, a test at five-eighths, for juveniles, when he was good enough to lead his field for the duration of the short sprint to register in a mild drive, in which he led Evergreen from the W. J. Salmon barn by two lengths. Rayo, after being away in last place and forced to close a big gap, finished an exceedingly close third, while Jug of Gold was in advance of the others. F. Kiniry had the mount on the victor, which was slightly regarded in the number. Gold Coin proved a successful favorite in the running of the second race, over the three-quarters route, when in a hard drive, he emerged victorious by a scant neck over Perriehon, which, in turn, beat Gold Dust five lengths for second place. There were an even dozen starters and the early stages found Bob Johnson leading, with the winner following in close pursuit until approaching the stretch turn, where Goodwin shook him up to assume command, only to be forced to a hard drive to withstand the rush of Pierre- hon. Another upset marked the running of the third race, in which some shifty sprinters started over the five and one-half furlongs course, when Lady McNeil, in the silks of the Canadian-owned Riverdale Stable, and a rank outsider in the wagering, got up in the last few strides to earn a close decision over Thestylis, another outsider, while John-. ny Agee accounted for the minor award be-r fore Ella Rufus and the three others that started. Calm was held at prohibitive odds. Lady McNeil, in the early stages, lacked speed enough to keep up with the leaders and she was next to last turning out of the back stretch. When fully in her stride, Mclver took a wide course but the mare showed high speed, gained steadily, and at the end appeared to be going easily. Calm was away in good fashion, but met interference leaving the back stretch and was unable to recover thereafter, finishing fifth. Phanariot, making his first appearance un-; der colors this year for the Seagram Stable, defeated a poor band of Dominion-breds in the mile and seventy yards race for which he came in for good support and, incidentally, it was the first score of Canadas leading racing establishment at the present meeting. Phanariot, after following the pace set by Goeland and Gallopin Diamond, took command after seven-eighths and, under urg-1 ing to make victory certain, led Gallopin Diamond by three lengths, while just a nose back of the latter came Miss Gaiety II., to lead Goeland and the others.
