FOUR FOR ROBERTSON Whitney Jockey Rides in Brilliant Fashion at Bowie. Macil Accounts for Old Maryland Spring Purse Annapolis Scores in Parkway Purse. 1 BOWIE, Md., April 7. Al Westons Macil was winner of the Old Maryland Spring Purse at Bowie this afternoon. Mr. Weston, being one of the stewards of the meeting, vacated the stand during the race and his place was taken by William Shrewbridge. The victory in this race marked the third of the day for the II. P. Whitney rider A. Robertson. Later Robertson made it four winners for the day when he rode-Frank Fullen to victory in the sixth race. It was Robertson who brought Chickweed home winner of the second race and his other triumph was on his employers Equipoise, a good juvenile which was making his first appearance. It was with Macil, however, that Robertsons riding skill was put to the test. He seemed beaten by G. L. Strykers Aziz a few strides from the finish, but Hebert was no match for the Whitney jockey in the desperate finish. With rain almost all day Sunday and another shower shortly before the first race, the course was heavy, but the clouds went . away and overhead conditions were delightful before the program began. The changed track conditions resulted in some withdrawals and the Parkway Purse, a mile and a sixteenth affair that promised good sport, saw only Walter J. Salmons Annapolis and J. Smalfmans Clear Sky under colors. MflHlr QUICKLY TAKES COMMAND. L Five raced in tlie Old Maryland Spring Purse and, with no delay at the post, the start was a good one and Robertson lost no time in sending Macil into the command. Aziz raced after him while Ponce was messing Water Lad about badly and he did settle into his stride. Keydet was badly outrun and was far back. Robertson nursed Macil along cleverly in the lead, but inside the final eighth the colt was tiring badly and Aziz was gaining on him. It was in this fashion they came into the final sixteenth and it seemed certain that Aziz would win, but Robertson fairly lifted a tired colt over the line winner by a nose. Water Lad saved third, but he was six lengths back and only a head before Keydet." After the Parkway Purse had been reduced to two starters it was no trick for Walter J. Salmons Annapolis to score his third victory of the meeting. There, really was nothing to the race from the first to the last stride. Annapolis was showing the way to the son of Sir Barton and he was still under restraint to be winner by two lengths. Clear Sky raced gamely back of the son of Man o War and stood a long drive, but he was outrun and had no chance. The opening race was a five and a half furlongs contest for three-year-old maiden fillies and it saw George Lerians Chickweed winner when she led home S. W. Labrots Wild Fowl, with J. C. Cremens Kitty Marie saving third from Bootee. With little delay at the post the field left in good alignment and Kitty Marie at once raced into command, while Chickweed was rated back of her by Robertson and Lady Langford was a distant third. t Robertson waited patiently back of the pace with the winner until the stretch was reached, where he shook up Chickweed and she raced past to be winner by a good five lengths. LADY LOXGFORI QUITS. Wild Fowl, after being outrun in the early stages, finished gamely to take second place, while Kitty Marie quit badly and just saved third from Bootee by half a length. Lady Longford had no excuses and quit badly, while Merrie MacQueen ran out badly at the head of the stretch just when she seemed to have a chance to share in the purse. A cheap band started in the second race, and A. Brents Propus was winner from Valley, from the Kilrane Stable, and Mrs. L. O. Sawyers One Cent was third before J. P. Jones Fire Belle. Valley was the one to set the pace. Thurber sent her along into a good early lead and, showing the way to ths last sixteenth, tired suddenly, and when Snider found room to come through on the inside with Propus, he was winner by a neck. One Cent was at the heels of the Brent horse, and Fire Belle" a distant fourth. Maurice did not begin with the others. Juvenile non-winners of two races other than claiming, were brought out fot-.the third race. This brought victory to the H. P. Whitney silks when Equipoise, a son of Pennant and Swinging, scored over Glidelia, from the Rancocas Stable, while Drydock. racing for the Nevada Stock Farm Stable, beat Brandon Saint for third. Though the track was heavy, the performance of Equipoise was probably the best juvenile showing of the meeting when he finished the half mile in :48VS, to be winner with ease.
