PRINCE ATHELING HANDILY Only Derby Candidate to Attempt Any Real Work at Churchill Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 18. Trainers of Derby candidates at the Downs were on the slow side with their charges this morning, only one trial of note being that of John Marsehs Prince Atheling. The black son of Atheling II. Miss Laura, which trainer Cecil Howard sent a brisk three-quarters in the fractional time of 25, :50, 1 :03, 1:18. He worked alone and was not pushed to his utmost to accomplish this move. His stable companion, Play Ball, another Derby eligible in this Chicago owners barn, was sent a quarter mile in :25 in preparation for a longer trial Saturday. C. N. Lewis sent Sam Wooldridge, the Derby candidate of D. Lampton, a quarter in :2iVz and his own candidate for the "classic. Devlin, a like distance in :24. Trainer Lowenstein has sent the Royal Stables Florida Gold to Lexington to race. "Willie Crump, who trains the horses of J. "W". Parrish, including the Derby candidate. Stock Market, took in the opening days racing at Lexington, but returned to Louisville last night. Other horsemen who attended the races at -Lexington Thursday were on the job again at the Downs this morning. High Foot, Gallant Knight, The Senator, Maudlin. Jack Spratt, Big Stuff, Stock Mar-get and other candidates for the "classic" were given slow canters. The Downs was fast, being benefited by the light rainfall of Thursday night, which served to lay the deep dust accumulated on the course. One of the twenty-four-stall barns that were erected near the three-quarters post has been completed nd is ready for occupancy.
