IMPRESSES WORK WATCHERS E. F. Prichards Tannery Goes One Mile and an Eighth in Brilliant Fashion. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 30. That Tannery, Edward F. Prichards son of Ballot, which opened his 1930 campaign with a sparkling victory last Saturday, will be at his best for a race over one and one-sixteenth miles here Saturday, was forcibly demonstrated when he galloped one mile and a furlong this morning in 1 :54. It was a smashing move by the Kentucky Derby candidate and left little doubt that he will prove one of the most formidable of the western-owned hopes for the Churchill Downs feature. A. Baker, trainer of the much-admired chestnut, had him on the course at a time when it had lost practically all of the moisture found at daybreak and resulting from heavy showers during the previous evening. Beginning his trial at the eighth post and hard held throughout, he went the quarter in :255s, half mile in :50, three-quarters in 1:15. seven-eighths in 1:28 and the mile in 1 :42. As the fractionate of time indicate, there was no diminishing of his speed, the slowest quarter, :267s, from the three-eighths post to the eighth pole, including the exacting uphill furlong of the century old race course. After negotiating one mile, the sterling colt added another eighth in :12, and was pulling hard for more rein as he approached the end of the route. The brilliance of his work, accomplished without the assistance of a pacemaker, was added to by his exceptionally fresh condition after being pulled up. He was not long in "cooling out," and trainer Baker again reiterated the belief that "he can do things easier than some of the best horses I have seen." In his engagement Saturday, Tannery is expected to encounter Breezing Thru, Sydney, Uncle Luther, Gold Step and possibly others among the best of the three-year-olds here. Whisp, R. S. Clarks Derby candidate, also in Bakers care, showed fine speed when in company with the older Clog Dance he went five-eighths in 1:00 and pulled up three-quarters in 1:16. They were timed in :2zys for the quarter and in :48 for a half mile.
