6 DERBY CANDIDATES WORK Pittsburgher, Insco, Spanish Play, Don Leon and Up in Good Training Moves. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 6.— Some of the leading Western-owned candidates for the fifty-seventh Kentucky Derby were active here this morning when Pittsburgher, Insco, Spanish Play, Don Leon and Up went through beneficial rehearsals. All are among the probable acceptances for the Preliminary Purse, to be run Friday, and the work concludes their preparation for that test, one of the most important pre-derby trials in several years here. Pittsburgher, reigning western favorite for the classic, was sent to the track with Rain Cloud, and went three-quarters in 1:15% handily. The crack Theodore E. Mueller candidate is not much of a worker, but went along well enough for trainer James Moody, who caught him in :49% for the first half mile. Knebelkamp and Morris Spanish Play, coming up to the Derby in splendid condition, worked a mile unaccompanied in 1:42%, well in hand, and galloped out an additional eighth in 1:57. The Louisiana Derby winner ran the half mile in :49%, three-quarters in 1:15% and seven-eighths in 129. Trainer George Land is confident that he will flash his best form in the preliminary, and others about the Knebelkamp and Morris camp look for him to triumph in the race. Insco, Griffin Watkins hopeful displayed keen speed in traversing five-eighths in :59%, and eased up three-quarters in 1:15%. He rattled off the quarter in :23%, and the half in :47. Like other of the Derby colts, he drilled on the main track, and was not distressed by the preparatory effort. Under the direction of his owner-trainer, R. W. Collins, the speedy Don Leon was breezed a mile under strong restraint, and it appeared nothing like a task for him to go the distance in 1:46%. Eddie Coates, who was astride the son of Lee O. Cotner, refused to give him a chance to exhibit his great speed, and his neck was bowed throughout the trial. He ran the quarter in Continued on twenty-first page. He sped over the opening quarter in :24%, and negotiated the second quarter in like time. Stalls for a division of the Benjamin Block stable that will include the highly regarded Morstone, a new Richmond among the Derby candidates, have been set aside, and trainer Clarence Buxton is expected to unload the crack son of Morvich and a few others early next week. Morstones brilliant winning performance in the Spring Handicap at Jamaica, yesterday, left scant, if any, room to doubt that he is among the fastest of his age. Quarters for C. V. Whitneys Equipoise. Mrs. Payne Whitneys Twenty Grand, Anchors Aweigh and Surf Board, A. C. Bost-wicks Mate, a division of the W. Ziegler stable that will include a Derby starter, and others among the eastern-owned eligi-bles likely to start, also are in readiness.
