AURORA COURSE MUDDY « Rain Fails to Seriously Affect Ladies Day Attendance. ♦ Tanist Scores Popular Victory in Fifth Race — Goodbye Summer Wins at Long Price. ♦ AURORA. 111., May 8. — Disagreeable weather was again in order at Exposition Park this afternoon. Rain drizzled down throughout the day and the track, for the first time at the meeting, was muddy. Despite the inclement conditions the attendance was fairly good, being bolstered to some extent by feminine fans who were admitted to the park free of charge, this being Ladies Day. The program again lacked an outstanding race and platers had another chance to win a purse. Tanist, which finished first in the fifth race, was a popular winner. He had many supporters, and showing a liking for the difficult going, passed Yam Toy, the early pacemaker, after racing a half. He had enough left to withstand the final challenge of Bosky. The latter was bumped on the first turn, and showed a fine effort to be a close up second, while Yam Toy saved third money. Tanist was ridden by jockey L. Cunningham, who ran up a string of victories on the tracks in the west during the past winter. LONGEST PRICE OF MEETING. The longest priced winner of the meeting was returned in the opening race when Goodbye Summer, from the Paradise Stock Farm of J. P. Headley, won and paid 41.46. The filly scored an easy victory, due mainly to the manner in which jockey Page rode her in the final stages of the race. She worked her way into a contending position on the stretch turn, was then taken to the inside rail and, saving much ground, scored by two lengths from the well backed Sam Cole, with American Thunder, the pacemaker, finishing in third place. The race was run over a muddy track and ten started. Jockey A. Richard, leading rider at the meeting, added to his score when he piloted Meridianese home winner of the second race. He rated the filly confidently in the early stages and, going to the outside of the leaders in the stretch, wore them down and was two lengths in advance of Orestes II., the place horse, at the finish. Foxy Seth, which was fairly well backed, got up in time to be third, while the favored Prancing Step was unplaced. Thistle Vic, making his first start since arriving from Lexington, showed good form In the going to lead for the entire distance in the third race. GAME EXHIBITION. Although Good Friend, which started slowly, made a determined challenge in the stretch, the son of Chilhowee was game and held sway until the finish was passed. Try-cobel finished third, while Lucky Carter, which came in for considerable play, was never dangerous. A field of twelve started and the winner paid .88. The race was for maiden three-year-olds. Baby Bane, which raced consistently in the West during the past winter, scored her initial victory of the meeting when she led for practically the entire distance in the fourth race. Jockey Roble was in the saddle and kept the filly going long enough to hold Mailliw, a previous winner at the meeting, safe. Beggar Lady took third money. Wise Cheer, one of the starters, slipped and went to his knees after leaving the backstretch, injuring himself so badly that it will probably be found necessary to destroy him. Jockey B. Hanford. who was on the animal, retained his seat and pulled Wise Cheer up on the stretch turn. Robina Seth, with apprentice A. Dickey in the saddle, stole a long early lead in the sixth race and the margin gained enabled her to score over Lillian T., the favorite. The winner was fully six lengths in front on the stretch turn and, although Lillian T. came fast, she was beaten over a length by the Major mare. Mi Companero finished in third place, while the remaining four horses were far back. The race was over the mile and a sixteenth distance.
