■ A La Carte Wins Ohio State Derby SPANISH PLAY SECOND ♦ Up Third in 2,000 Added Feature at Bainbridge. » Flag Bearer Scores Easy Victory in Handicap — Monster Crowd at Cleveland Track. » CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 23.— A La Carte, racing in the colors of the Alton Stable, owned by J. H. Louchheim of New York, trained by Clarence Buxton, and ridden by jockey F. Catrone, captured the 2,000 Ohio State Derby, the outstanding feature of the half-holiday card at Bainbridge Park this afternoon. Spanish Play, racing for Knebel-kamp and Morris, raced to second position, with Mrs. J. N. Croftons Up third. Morpheus and The Mongol followed the leaders home in the order named. Battle Sweep led around the first turn with Spanish Play, Lightning Bolt and A La Carte in closest attendance. Midway of the backstretch A La Carte took command and was never in trouble thereafter, drawing away most decisively during the stretch run. Spanish Play held to his task and retained a safe margin over the others during the run home. After suffering interference at the far turn, Up steadily improved his position and in the final drive outgamed Morpheus, which also came strongly during the run home. Lightning Bolt tired rapidly after racing prominently until midway of the stretch. LAUREL WREATH TO WINNER. Following the running of the Derby, A La Carte was decorated with a floral wreath and was well photographed by the cameramen. H. C. Bickle, mayor of Chardon, made the presentation of the huge silver trophy which went to the winner. Trainer Clarence accepted the trophy. Owing to the condition of the track, there was considerable scratching. The Derby Buffered somewhat in this respect. Six of those named overnight to go in the big race declined. The Derby was worth 1,580 to the winner. To the second horse, Spanish Play, went ,600. and Mrs. J. N. Crofton took down 00 due to Up having finished third. Morhpeus share for fourth was 50, and 50 went to The Mongol, the fifth horse. E. McCuans Flag Bearer made a runaway affair of the W. L. Stribling. Jr.. Handicap, the fifth and secondary feature. He was always in advance of the others and won with ease. Hypoluxo proved to be as easily best of the remaining trio. Colonel K. finished resolutely in the stretch and outlasted the tiring Conscience for third. W. L. Stribling, Jr., the well known boxer, after whom the race was named, witnessed the running from the stewards stand and was the center of attraction. OPENER TO THISTLE DUKE. George Collins Thistle Duke accounted for the opening race. He shook off Brink-ley, Noon Play and Hogans Alley after making the far turn, then drew away into an easy lead in the stretch. Brinkley disposed of Hogans Alley rather handily in the last quarter for second place. Noon Play ceased to be a serious factor after reaching the stretch. Belgium and Icarus raced closely lapped for the entire distance in the second race with the former showing slightly in advance and favored with the inside position. All through the stretch jockey Fage, on Belgium, carried Icarus wide and the latter tired in the last seventy yards. Fair Glow held the others practically safe throughout. F. Almys La Belotte scored her fifth straight victory when she took the measure of some good sprinters in the fourth race. La Belotte and Sunny Morn raced closely lapped for half the distance, but Sunny Morn found the pace too hot and La Belotte drew away in the stretch to win easily. Sunny Morn had little opposition for second place, and Lucky Dan easily disposed of Gideon in the drive for the minor award.
