Appleton Memorial Steeplechase — Largest Crowd of Year. — — • NEW YORK, N. Y, May 23.— Questionnaire, emulating his distinguished sire. Sting, carried the James Butler silks to an easy victory in the famous old Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park today. Well back of the handsome bay, second place went to Mokatam, from the Rancocas Stable, while Walter M. Jeffords three-year-old Aegis was a distant third. Unfortunately there was an accident in the race when Ral Parrs good filly, Her Grace, ran up on the heels of one of the others at the five furlongs post, and stumbled. Eddie Watters was unseated, but fortunately escaped injury. Of the dozen originally scheduled to race, six withdrew by reason of the muddy condition of the track, and the prize had a net value of ,520 to the winner. The lure of the Metropolitan and the Charles L. Appleton Memorial Steeplechase resulted in a monster attendance at the big Nassau County course. It was by long odds the greatest crowd of the year, and never was there a more representative gathering. James Butler, who has been ailing for some time, was able to be out to see his great colt win. The start in the Metropolitan was an excellent one, and while Questionnaire was first out of the stalls, he at once gave way to Polydorus, and Curate was the one to chase after the lightweight. Her Grace was right in the fight when she met with the accident that unseated Watters. WORKMANS CONFIDENT RIDE. Workman was riding a confident race on the Butler colt and made no serious effort to send him after the leaders in the early stages. Thus it was that Curate and Polydorus raced each other into exhaustion. Then Mokatam moved up to join them and Questionnaire was in the rear. Holding a position next to the rail, Workman finally shook up the son of Sting, and he raced past the others with ease. Turning into the stretch, well clear of the others, he was under restraint for the remainder of the journey, to be past the line winner by four lengths. Mokatam was three lengths before Allez Vite, which was third because he had taken no part in the early racing. Both Curate and Polydorus quit badly in the final furlong. The race was one to give Questionnaire a high place in the handicap division. He came out of the race magnificently and gave the impression that he will race as far as any other horse. Edward R. Bradleys Beelzebub, under top weight, was winner of the Charles L. Apple-ton Memorial Steeplechase. It was a magnificent performance and probably the best he has shown. Several in the big field went after him in relays, but he raced them all into defeat and then successfully withstood the final challenge of Thomas Hitchcocks Chenango which, under a perfectly timed ride by "Pete" Bostwick, took second place. Third fell to Argonaut, from the Rolling Plains Stable. The race had a net value of ,200 to the winner, and of the fifteen that started the only one that did not complete the course was Stephen Sanfords Royal Falcon, which made a bad landing over the water and injured himself to such an extent that he was pulled up by Jeffcott. Jockey F. Coltiletti has signed to ride Sweep All in most of his important races this summer. *
