Rose Scintillating Star of Churchill Downs Closing Day Program » LOUISVILLE, Ky.. May 23.— Gallant Knight, B. B. Jones fine home-bred son of Bright Knight and Ethel Gray, was a cantering winner over Lady Broadcast, Mike Hall and Royal Julian in the Grainger Memorial Handicap, as the curtain was rung down on the nineteen-day spring meeting at Churchill Downs today. Making his own pace and running the one mile and a quarter over a cuppy, but good track, in the remarkable time of 2:0515, he reached the finish six lengths in front of Lady Broad- , cast, cast, which, which, in in turn, turn, led led Mike Mike Hall xiall bv Dy a a 1 1 • r • ■ I I : • I I 5 J • f J - • | ■ l I I • J : cast, cast, which, which, in in turn, turn, led led Mike Mike Hall xiall bv Dy a a ;half length and Royal Julian by twice that small margin. It was the nineteenth running of the fixture, won last year by Mr. Jones Easter Stockings and despite cool, partly cloudy weather, a banner crowd was out to witness the contest and final program of the sport in Kentucky until Latonia opens for its summer meeting late next month. While Lady Broadcast, Mike Hall and Royal Julian closed in an interesting finish for the minor honors, the swift and rugged winner was never fully extended and, reaching the close of the opening quarter, was in full command of the situation. At the end of the first half mile, which he traversed in :47%, he held a margin of three lengths over Lady Broadcast and had another length a quarter closer to the finish of the long route. He was timed in 1:12% for the three-quarters, and at this juncture Lady Broadcast was two lengths in the van of Mike Hall. As Gallant Knight went on with his remarkable display of speed under the conditions to complete the mile in 1:38%, Mike Hall and Royal Julian were moving up slightly to threaten Lady Broadcasts place. Through the closing quarter the winner raced under strong restraint, and as he cantered the two furlongs in :26%. Lady Broadcast gamely withstood Mike Hall and Royal Julian to earn second money and honors. Aside from the splendid performance of Gallant Knight, the brilliant horsemanship of jockey M. Rose featured the closing day program at Churchill Downs. Rose rode five winners and well earned the plaudits of the big crowd present. Rosa W. and Epidemic, the starters of Mrs. R. J. Wilkerson, finished first and fourth as named in the five-eighths race for maiden juveniles, which opened the final program. Rosa W. outstayed Dis Dat, and Barashkova, in a thrilling finish, while her stablemate, four lengths back, led Beauty Bride by inches to hold the seven unplaced safe. Lucky at the start, where Sweepstral wheeled and Epidemic met sharp interference, the winner took the lead, and, holding on with good courage, lasted to win Continued on twenty-first page. i i i i ; i I I I I 1 i ! ! i ] ] i 1 j i ; • GRAINGER TO GALLANT KNIGHT: Continued from first page. by a head as Dis Dat wore down the poorly ridden Barashkova for second place. The blue and white colors of J. Graham Brown, local owner, scored a triumph when his filly, Sis Agnes, scored a handy victory over Perkins, Beige and others in the sec- ond race. Twelve started, and the race was run over the six and one-half furlongs distance, and saw Beige giving way to Perkins and then to the winner after leading up to the stretch. After heading Beige and draw- ing clear. Perkins could not cope with the winner, which took first honors in handy -fashion. Beige saved third by two lengths from Fudge. Morris Rose rode his third winner in as many races when he kept the Oakland Farms Matadi in front for the entire mile of the third race, for which Fair Rosalind and Quiver had the largest following. Neither of the latter accounted for a part of the purse, the place going to Flying Cherokee and third to St. Jim. Matadi won under hard urging and by three-quar- ters of a length, and Rose disposed of Fair Rosalind when he permitted the winner to crowd the filly when he moved up strongly on the inside at the stretch turn. Rose rode his fourth winner in Oh Dave, the Lair and Parrish youngster which op- posed nine other of the platers in the five- eighths of the fourth, and was again required to exert his skill when Memoran- dum gave the son of Barcolo the sternest sort of an argument during the last fur- long. Memorandum approached the place of finish over the most holding part of the track and but for the disadvantage in the footing might have reversed the finish with the victor. Delven was the one to show the most early speed, and he held sway by a clear margin for a half mile, only to weaken when the final test de- veloped. Oh Dave, like two of the earlier winners piloted by Rose, ruled at good odds. Mose Goldblatt was forced to withdraw his Jimmy Moran from the Grainger Memorial when the colt wrenched a shoulder while in his stall. Robert Frakes, well known owner and trainer, is at Ashville, N. C, for treatment for a nervous condition of his stomach, which caused him to close his training stable at the Kentucky Association course. ■ ; j j j . . : j , , , j . j , ] . j , . ] j j j j x 1 t c J ± t € t .
