BREAKS TRACK RECORD * Bargello Lowers Mile Time at Washington Park to 1 :37. « of Bunting Shows Marked Improvement in Accounting for Riverdale Purse. • HOMEWOOD. 111., June 4.— After showing ft very ordinary performance in his last fetart. wh?n he finished unplaced in a field Qf four, Bargello, the five-year-old son of Bunting, came back this afternoon to show jnuch improvement and shatter the track record for one mile. His success came with the running of the Riverdale Purse, feature race of the day, and he ran the distance in 1:37 to clip two-fifths of a second from the track mark. Overlay was second, six lengths back of the leader, while struggling in third place was Thistle Fyrn, and Royal Ruffin brought up in the rear. But four horses faced the barrier, and sentiment was about equally divided between the winner and Thistle Fyrn. Where Bargello showed improvement. Thistle Fyran ran an exceptionally dull race. Although in close quarters soon after the start she displayed but little speed when subjected to punishment and was badly beaten at the finish. Bargello went to the front at once and was never fully extended, winning by a wide margin. Overlay was always in second place, while Royal Ruffin seemed outclassed. The winner was ridden by K. Russell and paid .70 to win and .34 to place. TRACK AT BEST. The Thursday afternoon program was witnessed by a gathering which was in keeping with previous days, and the weather, though still quite warm, was not as oppressive as that of yesterday. The track was at its best. Marvina. a western owned filly, entered the winners circle for the first time in her career when she won the initial race. Off fast, she took a long lead after going a quarter and was never in danger. Playing, which was steadily backed in some quarters, raced well to be second, while Escoba Land, after being in tight quarters rounding the far turn, was third. Pirogue was favored, but jockey L. Jones, accepting his first mount in some time, was unable to get her into a contending position. Marvina was grouped in the field and was ridden by jockey A. Fischer. It was the first winning mount for the lad since his accident at Aurora. Jockey Earl Pool saved ground in the stretch run with Mucker to win the second race. A field of twelve went to the post, and Jeanne Wachs set the pace to the far turn, where she was headed by Genghis Khan. When the latter began to tire at the stretch turn, Jeanne Wachs again took command, but her margin was shortlived as she was soon passed by Mucker, which led to the finish. Porphyry, a field horse, raced to second place, and Emulator, always close up, was third. Agitator was a short priced favorite but was never a serious factor. THIRD STRAIGHT VICTORY. H. P. Headleys good colt Indian Runner, won his third straight purse, and his second of the meeting when he finished first in the third race. Rushed into contention soon after the start by jockey C. Meyer, he headed the others in the run home and lasted long enough to hold Dyak safe. The latter was favorite, and saved ground where possible, but although finishing in courageous fashion, could not get up in time. Cee Tee. from a slow beginning, finished third, but came out of the race badly cut. The winner was not named for the Thomas Cur-ran Memorial Handicap, to be run June 13, although most of the other starters are eligible. Nostaw was much the best in the fourth race, and, although given a weak ride by jockey Meade, was erood enough to win by more than a length. The gelding was blocked and forced back in the first fifty yards, was in close quarters during the back stretch run, and raced into a pocket at the far turn, but was then taken to the outside and once in the clear wore down the early leaders, and was going away at the finish. Hand to Hand, after racing on even terms with Suitor in the early stages, shook off the latter. in the final quarter and lasted to be second, while Jean Lafitte was third. Nostaw was a heavily backed favorite, and Continued on twenty-second page. i , ! I | BREAKS TRACK RECORD Continued from first page. scored a popular win. The race was at one mile. Coming from far back in the final quarter, Bunch of Lilies got up in time to win the sixth race from a large band of distance runners. The winner began slowly and was outrun for a half mile, but then came with a rush which carried her to first place at mid-stretch. Bright Day was a game second and Lillian T. saved third place. Princess Edith was favored, but after being prominent for seven furlongs tired in the stretch.
