HAWTHORNES FIVE STAKES , » — Nominations for Hawthorne Handicap and Stakes Close July 11. » Dates of Running of These Features Announced — Double Attractions Arranged for Two Saturdays. • Officials of the Hawthorne race track today broadcast notice to horsemen calling their attention to the closing date for entries for the five turf fixtures that feature their summer meeting, beginning August 3. These fixtures are headed by the rich Hawthorne Handicap, carrying 5,000 in added money, and include the Illinois and Hawthorne Juvenile Handicaps, with 0,000 added each, and the Fort Dearborn and Great Lakes Handicaps, each worth ,000 in added money. The closing date for entries is July 11. According to president John C. Schank and general manager Joseph A. Murphy, the nominations already received indicate that the previous high marks for each of the quintet of stakes will be broken. There is every indication that all of the leading stables in the country will be represented in one or more of these races, for the dates come at a time when Hawthorne virtually has the midwestern turf scene all to itself. The meeting follows Arlington Park, and comes one week after Latonia closes, hence there is no conflict with a major track in this section. This break in dates moved Messrs. Schank and Murphy to crowd all five fixtures into the summer meeting, thus insuring the absolute top so far as the fields are concerned. To do this however, it was necessary to schedule a pair of events on two Saturdays, thus giving race followers a double attraction on two afternoons during the meeting. The 5,000 Hawthorne Handicap is set for August 8, the first Saturday. The Illinois and Fort Dearborn Handicaps will be run off the following Saturday, August 15, and on the concluding Saturday, August 22, which, incidentally, is also the closing day of the meeting, the Hawthorne Juvenile and Great Lakes Handicaps will be run. Such a program holds every inducement to the crack eastern stables to remain over after their engagement at Arlington, and the nominations received thus far indicate that most of them plan that very move. While the Hawthorne Handicap stands out as the big feature of this array of stakes, the Illinois Handicap vies with it in point of local interest. It is for Illinois owners only, and the first running last year went Continued on twenty-first page. ] I . 1 • j i HAWTHORNES FIVE STAKES! No less than a half dozen new Illinois stables have resulted from this race, and there is keen rivalry among the various owners for the August 15 stakes.
