OTTAWA, Ont., June 4.— The Beaverdale Purse, at one mile, which was decided as the fourth race, was the event of most importance on todays program at Connaught Park. This affair resulted in a spectacular duel between two of the eight contestants, with victory going to Wrench, racing for H B. Pierce, when he waged a bitter battle with Mrs. R. Coopers Elizabeth in the final half mile of the journey to get past the winning line showing the way by a neck. Eight lengths in back of the pair came Granite Dust, in the colors of A. Smitha, while Sun-chen proved best of the four others. Little time was lost at the barrier before a good start was effected, and in the run to the first turn Sir Stanley took up the pacemaking role. Wrench went along in pursuit, while Sunchen followed right at their heels and was just showing the way to Elizabeth and the others. Sir Stanley was done before reaching the half mile mark, and as he dropped back Elizabeth went up to join Wrench. Thereafter the pair, with very little to choose between them, staged their battle, which was a bitterly fought duel, with the Pierce starter getting the verdict. Another ideal day and a good card furnished spectators at Connaught Park with an excellent brand of sport. Juveniles of the cheaper grade started in the opening race, and this saw Stefan Jr. a surprise winner for F. A. Temple when he led throughout, to lead home the favorite Argien, from the R. G. Narelle Stable, while third fell to V. A. OConnors High Born. Ladies will be the guests of the Connaught Park Jockey Club for the first time this season on Friday.
