Ellis HOMEWOOD, 111., June 13.— American Derby week opens with twenty of the 148 eligibles comprising the probable field that will race one mile and a quarter in the renewal of that 0,000 added fixture next Saturday at Washington Park. Of the score, fourteen are considered almost positive starters, and others may gain opportunity to try for the coveted prize through private or public performance during the next few days. Those making up the probable field at this time are: Twenty Grand, Mate, Spanish Play, Lightning Bolt, Anchors Aweigh, Sweep All, Oswego, Sun Meadow, Ladder. Boys Howdy, Pittsburgher, Knights Call, Hyman and The Mongol, while Surf Board, Up, Joey Bibb, Conscience, Sunny Lassie and Quatra Bras II. have not been dropped from consideration, and a starter or two may come from among their number. With the Belmont Stakes decided, the Washington Park race is not only the next important fixture for three-year-olds, but one of the most valuable races of the year. There is great interest in Saturdays annual running since the stake, first run in 1884, was revived, and officials of the Washington Park Jockey Club look for it to prove one of the outstanding attractions of the Chicago season. Continued on twenty-second page. AMERICAN DERBY NEXT Continued from first page. Mate and Ladder, two of the leading eastern candidates, are due at Washington Park Monday, and track officials are confident that both Twenty Grand and Sun Meadow will .come on to contest the race. Twenty Grand may be assisted by Anchors Aweigh or Surf Board, or both, and still another invader, Boys Howdy, is due at the Home-wood track. Sweep All, Spanish Play, Lightning Bolt, Pittsburgher, Oswego and Knights Call, best of the western hopefuls, have been showing fine form, and, barring accidents, the western forces should prove the strongest in the record of the race. Sunny Lassie remains the only filly with a chance to start, and if the Middleburg Stable miss enters the race, George Ellis, who rode Mate to victory in the Preaknes3 Stakes and in the Kentucky Derby, in which he finished third, will have the mount. If she doe3 not start, Ellis will again handle Mate. With fifteen starters, the race will have a gross value of more than 1,000, and the winners share will exceed 1,000. Lightning Bolt, winner of the Florida Derby, and successful over some American Derby candidates in a race at Washington Park several days ago, worked one mile and one-eighth in 1:56% handily, at the Homewood course this morning. This son of Wrack appears at top form, and has many admirers for Saturdays race.
