The highly regarded Miss Careful failed to race to her best form and after beginning slowly she failed to improve her position. SECOND FAVORITE SCORES. The victory of Billies Orphan was the second of the afternoon for the favorites and. although she is not eligible for the Bashford Manor Stakes, she showed an impressive effort over the fast but dull track by running the distance in :55. A surprise came with the running of the New Hope Purse, the first race, when the estate of Joseph Leiter furnished the winner in Prince Westend. a maiden son of Westwick and Edna Marse. Vennie H., another lightly regarded one. was second, with Iredell third. A. Anderson had the winner in the lead soon after the start and, drawing away into a good lead, continued to speed on to be much the best of Vennie H. Chatwink and Star Brook, which received the most support, were in close quarters in the early stages, but after finding room in the stretch were unable to menace the leaders. Johnny Schorr saddled another winner for the Three Ds Stock Farm of W. T. Waggoner and Sons when Trinchera garnered his third straight victory in accounting for the Eastern Parkway Claiming Purse, which engaged a field of twelve at three-quarters. Second place went to Dis Dat, with the minor award going to Zean. AMBROSE PILOTS WINNER. After following Judge Primrose to the stretch, the veteran Eddie Ambrose sent the winner through on the rail to take command with ease and have nearly a two-length advantage at the end. While in a contending position. Bronze Bird broke a leg and had to be destroyed. Jockey C. Meyer, who was astride the unfortunate animal, luckily escaped injury. The stable of P. H. Krick and Son furnished the winner of the third race, which brought out a field of the better platers when Gettin Even, a winner on charity day, proved easily the best of Chene, Bather and seven others. Speeding over the eight furlongs in 1:38%, Gettin Even, under top weight. 117 pounds, moved up gradually in the run down the back stretch and, overhauling Bill Looney after a half-mile, drew away with ease. Chene and Bather, slow to get going, soon displaced Polygamous and Son O Sweep and, although unable to cope with the flying leader, they came to the finish before the others, although Comstockery was pressing Bather at the end. Polygamous stepped in a hole while being pulled up after the finish and broke his left foreleg. Gettin Even was the favorite and the first of the afternoon to win. ♦
