DERBY FAVORITE IN WORKOUT ♦ Tick On Gallops One Mile Over Downs Track in 1:44. 1 iJberty Limited Works Same Distance In 1:42% — Trainer Believes Letup Good for Colt. « LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 2.— Tick On, favorite for the Kentucky Derby, to be run over one mile and a quarter at Churchill Downs here Saturday, had his first trial over the Derby course and next to final distance workout in preparation for the race, when he breezed a mile in 1:44 on a fast track this morning. This was the most important activity among the Derby colts, as the Loma Stable star, as a result of the deplorable elimination of Burning Blaze and unimpressive debut of Top Flight, now rules the popular choice. During his stay on the track this morning he was closely observed. Trainer Max Hirsch, who arrived late yesterday from Maryland, had the son of On Watch and Sox out early, and after he had galloped a mile, the colt was taken to the paddock. Following a short stay in the saddling enclosure, he returned to the track, working the eight furlongs of the main course from the stand. Pete Walls was in the saddle. Always under restraint, the colt ran along at an even pace, the quarter in :25%, half in :51, three-quarters in 1:18 and seven-eighths in 1:31. Hirsch is well pleased with his condition, and with one more hard work, believes that he will be thoroughly fit for the long, testing Derby grind. John Schorr, who has been training Liberty Limited for the Derby since late in January, and had to let up on him for a week due to minor heel cracks, sent the Three Ds Stock Farm candidate one mile this morning. Accompanied by Rowdy Boy, he ran the distance in 1:42%. In the late stages he was under mild pressure. Fractional times for the trial were :24, : 49, 1:02% and 1:16%. Yesterday afternoon Schorr "opened up" the son of Sir Gallahad III. for todays work, sending him five-eighths with Vestal Maid in 1:03. Barring unforeseen developments, Schorr is confident of having the Texas-owned colt at his best Saturday. He believes that the short respite from training may work to the colts advantage. He has been hardened by long gallops and trials for the last three months, and the weeks lay-off should not hurt his Derby chances.
