SHAUN GOILIN RETIRED LONDON, England.— Shaun Goilin, which was sold for 10 as a two-year-old, but later in his career was sold for ,250 to W. H. Midwood, for whom he won the 1930 Grand National, after winning the previous season, the Grand Sefton Steeplechase, has been retired from racing. Shaun Golin, which failed to win a race since capturing the most coveted of all steeplechases at Liverpool in 1930, last March safely negotiated the National course to finish third, competed in his last race when he tried conclusions in the Scottish Grand National at Bogside last month. He failed to cover the three and a half miles course, his rider, J. Goswell, pulling the old fellow up when little more than half the journey had been made. Shaun Goilin next winter will be used as a hunter by Midwood, who is joint master of the Cheshire Hunt. Another of Midwoods hunters is that one-time champion steeplechaser Silvo, third in the 1924 Grand National. During his racing career, which began when Shaun Goilin whose sires parentage is unknown was a five-year old, he competed in fifty races, but was only six times successful, four times second and nine times third. He raced in three Grand Nationals, and each time got safely over the exacting Aintree course. He was trained for all his races by the Irish horseman Frank Hartigan at Deyhill, England, and the Irish jockey T. Cullinan rode him to victory in the National.
