Century of Winning English Sires *•■ - ♦ Respective Leaders of Each Year Since 1819 to 1931, Inclusive — List Contains Names of Many of Turfs Greatest Horses • We present a table showing the winnings of the English thoroughbred sires during the past 113 years— in each year the sire whose progeny have won the greatest amount of money in stakes. It is a question if the amount of money won should always be taken as a criterion of merit. A horse may have had no chance to race for the most valuable stakes and yet was a better horse than those which did. In that case his sire does not figure as prominently. For example, General Peels death disqualified Peter by Hermit for the Derby for which he was winter favorite, the St. Leger and all the great events of 1879. But. for this Peters sire, Hermit, would possibly have headed the list a year before he did. St. Simon was not nominated for the great stakes of 1884. Had he been it is quite likely his sire, Galopin, would have headed the list that year instead of Hermit. However, as a rule, the money-wining list is reliable. It is usually determined by the valuable stakes, and these attract the best horses, as a glance at the list proves, a majority of the sires owing their lead to a Derby or St. Leger, Eclipse or Lancashire Plate winner. It is to be regretted that space does not permit giving the sires "placed," i. e., finishing second or third, as there have been quite a number of close finishes; for example, 1912, between Persimmon and Cyllene, and 1903 and 1907, between St. Frusquin and Gallinule, when only some few hundreds settled it, and in 1886, when, notwithstanding he had Ormonde to help him, Bend Or was beaten by Hermit by a small margin.
