6 MANY HORSES AT LATONIA More Than 700 Thoroughbreds Now Quartered at Covington Course. Every Stall to Be Filled Before Opening of Thirty-One Days Meeting Beginning Saturday. LATONIA, Ky., June 22. With more than 700 horses quartered on the grounds, and with more than a hundred expected from Chicago and other points, every available stall will be filled before the opening of the thirty-one-day meeting of the Latonia Jockey Club Saturday. Included in the large assembly will be some of the best thoroughbreds that have been seen under silks during the western racing season. Nominations for the seven stakes, the chief of which is the Golden Jubilee running of the Latonia Derby, carded for July 2, the second Saturday of the meeting, include the best horses now racing. This fact is also clearly shown by the probable field for the Clipsetta Stakes that will have its decision on opening day. Like the Derby, the misses contest is rich in tradition and the winner of the dash at five and a half furlongs probably will establish a new record for the distance. With Sewell S. Combs Nitumas fast work and the arrival of William Weants crack Wise Anne and F. C. McAtees Billies Orphan, the stakes took on a new lustre today. The Combs filly, which was second to Hilena in the Debutante Stakes at Washington Park, was on the track for her last important trial before the race and she electrified the large gathering of racing devotees by going five-eighths in 1:01 over the prevailing fast track. After a slow mile gallop, the daughter of Cherokee and Ancestress started her trial at the five-eighths post and rattled off the quarter in :24, the three-eighths in :36 and the half mile in :48. It was a very even work and the filly went about her task in businesslike, fashion. Trainer Carlos Ormesby was well pleased with the trial and stated that she cooled out in good style. Essen, Spartan Lady and High Complexion, the three Dixiana eligibles, were given their last stiff trial Tuesday aud will be called on only for an "opener" before the race. Jack Weaver sent W. E. Smiths Murphys Luck to the gate for schooling and, after standing there several minutes, the maiden Continued on twentieth page. Wise Anne and Billies Orphan had un eventful trips from Washington Park. Both won their last races and, with a short "opener," will be ready for their engagements. Like the Dixiana representatives, Dominant Miss and Blondella, which are expected to sport the colors of Tom Piatt and Thomas Carr Piatt in the Clipsetta, had their last important test Tuesday. , u F. In addition to the stakes, the first days program calls for the Licking Valley Handicap, a dash at three-quarters for three-year-olds and over. Weights and declarations for the race will be made Friday. There is a two-year-old race for maiden colts and geldings, and an allowance affair at a mile arid seventy yards for three-year-olds and over.
