BRILLIANT RACE PROMISED j i FOR HAWTHORNE GOLD CUP I j The Hawthorne Gold Cup, entries for which will close on Monday, July 18, promises to become once more the race of the year. Remaining as the most valuable weight-for-age race for three-year-olds and over, to be run in the United States or Canada, the management has been promised that the cracks of the East and West will be entered and will be here for competition when the race is run. Carrying out the sporting atmosphere which has always hovered about the race, the management has arranged to set the race so as not to conflict with the Saratoga Gold Cup, which will be run the last day of the meeting there, September 3, the day following the close "of Hawthornes meeting. The management will also, as usual, ship at its own expense, prospective candidates from Saratoga to Hawthorne and return, taking personal charge of the shipment and the care of the horses while in Chicago. The trophy, which was ordered yesterday, will be, as always, of pure gold, with amber marble base. The management has always tried to get away from the old fashioned cup and this year will be no exception to the rule. The trophy will be in the nature of a shrine with three pedestals holding a gold canopy with an amber ball on the top. In the center of the tripod will be a horse of solid gold, the entire trophy symbolizing the thoroughbred enshrined. It will be finished and on exhibition by the first of August.
