GALLANT KNIGHT AT BEST Looms Up as Favorite in Francis S. Peabody Memorial, Saturdays Washington Park Feature. HOMEWOOD, 111., June 22. With Gallant Knight, the great record-breaker in the Audley Farm Stable, in superb fettle following his sensational mile in track record time of 1:35 on the Washington Park course Tuesday, this brilliant son of Bright Knight loomed favorite for the 0,000 added Francis S. Peabody Memorial Handicap, to be renewed Saturday at the same track and at one mile and a quarter. "Gallant Knight is at his best," said trainer Kay Spence during a discussion of the splendid five-year-old today. "Give him a fast track Saturday and well have no excuses," Spence added. The prediction that, if run under favorable conditions, the Peabody Memorial will bring to Washington Park patrons another sensational performance, was frequently advanced today. Many good judges look for the Peabody winner to clip several seconds off the track record of 2:04, provided, of course, the track is fast Some of the less conservative believe that, with conditions right, the mile and a quarter mark of -2:00, established by Sarazen in the third of the great international series at Latonia several years back, is in grave danger. For this engagement, Gallant Knights rivals may include such remarkable handicap performers as: Polydorus, Spanish Play, Pittsburgher, Plucky Play, Burning tip, Osculator, Mate, Lady Broadcast, Prince Atheling, Karl Eitel, Sunmelus, Canfli and others, comprising as fine a field as ever went to the post at any of the Chicago tracks in several seasons. Gallant Knight and Mate will have up top weight of 123 pounds each, while Polydorus must carry 120 and Spanish Play 118. Plucky Play, most successful of the handicap division in the West last year, gets in with 115 pounds and lighter imposts prevail for the others. Canfli had her final serious preparation when she worked the Peabody Memorial distance in 2:08, easily, at Washington Park this morning. She ran the half mile in :47-, three-quarters in 1:13 and the mile in 1:40, following which she continued another quarter mile well in hand.
