DEWHURST WINNER BY HEAD Veteran Heupels Strong Ride Lands Stivers Colt in Front. Arouse Holds on Stubbornly for Third Place in Fast Dade Park Race Governor Laff oon Again in Attendance. HENDERSON, Ky., Aug. 22. The second week of the Dade Park Jockey Clubs summer meeting opened today at Dade Park under fine conditions and with a large Monday crowd on hand. Again Governor Ruby Laffoon, of Kentucky, who paid his first visit to the track Saturday, was a visitor and he witnessed much of the racing from the stewards stand. Without exception the various events comprising the program brought together racers of the lower grades, but in most instances they were closely matched, with several spirited contests resulting. In the second race, which tested eleven two-year-olds at five and. one-half furlongs, a strong and daring ride by the veteran Jake Heupel, landed B. W. Stivers Dewhurst the winner by a head over J. J. Flanigans Arouse. Frank K. was third, five lengths back and a length before Newshawk. Heupel drove the winner through along in the rail in the stretch and it was only when within a stride or two of the wire that the victor got his nose in front. While indulged with all the pacemaking, Arouse held on stubbornly, forcing the winner to run the distance on the fast track in the good time of 1:07. Shortly after the start, Newshawk, ridden by H. R. Riley, swerved to the inside forcing the winner and others back and Riley drew a suspension of five days for his failure to keep the youngster straight. J. M. Hukill saddled his first winner when J. Hal Woodfords Heavy Sugar was returned victorious in the opening dash, which engaged twelve maidens of the older sort at three-quarters. The winner wore down Decoration Lady, the early pacemaker, after reaching the stretch and, after drawing clear, continued well enough to win by a length from Transmit, which raced prominently throughout. After being headed in the stretch, Decoration Lady faltered, but was good enough to nose out Gloria Diane, favorite, for third. The latter stumbled at the start and might have been best. Heupel lost a tough race with Murky Cloud when, after being the victim of a ragged start, she only failed by a half-length to wear down Harry Hieover in the three-quarters third race. Harry Hieover had a decided advantage in the start and made every post a winning one. Deemster saved third over Twill.
