WIDENERS FRENCH STABLE President of Belmont Park Track Meets With Success in Racing Abroad. NE WYORK, N. Y., Sept. 3. Joseph E. Widener, vice-chairman of. The Jockey Club and president of the Westchester Racing Association, has returned from his annual two months vacation in Europe. Mr. Widener spent most of his time while abroad in France, where he races a large stable of horses and breeds thoroughbreds on an extensive scale. He paid a short visit to England and inspected the horses he has in training with Capt. Cecil Boyd-Rochfort at Freemason Lodge, Newmarket. Accompanied by his son, P. A. Widener, and his daughter-in-law, Mrs. P. A. Widener, he also found time for a trip into Central Europe. Before sailing from France, Mr. Widener attended the Deauville meeting and saw his red and white-striped silks carried to several victories, and none gave him more pleasure than the successes of his handy two-year-old filly, Tattle, and his four-year-old filly, Confidence. The last named he bred. Another winner at Deauville under his colors was the two-year-old colt, On Parade, a bay son of defunc Phalaris, from Donnina sister to the Two Thousand Guineas winner, Dio-phon, by the Derby winner, Grand Parade, from Donnetta a great race mare and equally great winner producer, by Dono- van, from Rinovata. On Parade was purchased last year at the Doncaster yearling sales by the French trainer, Frank Carter, acting for Mr. Widener, and cost 0,000. His victory in the five furlongs Prix Vacowlef Plate was achieved in the manner of a real good colt. In Tattle it is claimed that the Philadelphia sportsman owns one of the best two-year-old fillies racing in France, though it would appear that there are many in-and-out performers among the juveniles .there this season. She is rated one of the best youngsters in trainer Frank Carters all-conquering stable. She is a good looking bay brown daughter of Dark Legend Ta-toule, by the French Derby winner, Alcantara II., from Titanite half-sister to Astrella, the dam of the Royal Hunt Cup winner, Asterus. She was bred by Leon Mantacheff, who sold her as a yearling to her present owner. Mr. Widener is employing two trainers this year in France, Frank Carter having care of most of his two-year-olds, while his old associate, Jerry Welsh, trains the older horses. During his visit he weeded out many of the less successful of his string for sale. He also disposed of five yearlings, but will maintain his French racing stable at the same standard as in the past.
