t t PLAN BETTING NOVELTY FOR FAIRMOUNT PARK I i A ST. LOUIS, Mo., Sept. 3 When the Fair-mount Jockey Club opens its autumn meeting Saturday, September 17, Joseph Cattarinich will introduce a novel betting scheme which is expected- to rival the "daily double" in popularity. The new plan is a one-two bet on the eighth race and it likely will be called the "quiniela," which is the name used in the Spanish ball game of jai alai wherein the principle involved is precisely the same. Assuming that there are twelve horses starting in the eighth race, the bettor has a choice of sixty-six different combinations. It is not necessary, however, that he place the horses exactly first and second in order to collect. If the ticket he buys is on horses three and six, he is entitled to his share of the pool whether the number three horse finishes first with number six second or the reverse: Number six, the winner and number three in second place. If either of the horses finishes third or worse, he loses. Cattarinich gave the "quiniela" a trial in Canada and it met with a generous response and in view of the success of the "daily double" here last year it is expected that the new feature will be equally popular. General manager Robert S. Eddy has been at Bainbridge with Cattarinich for the past week but will return to Fairmount Tuesday. There are applications on file for stalls for 625 horses and it is expected that nearly 800 horses will be in the barns when the meeting opens.
