C. V. WHITNEYS SKIRL Defeats Portcodine in Spectacular and Hard Fought Finish. Outlasts Creech Gelding by a Nose in Terminal Claiming Purse Track Remains Slow. LATONIA, Ky., Nov. 8. Skirl, the versa-.tile performing Broomstick gelding that races for C. V. Whitney, scored by a nose in the three-quarters Dixie Terminal Claiming Purse, for all ages, the best offering on a card entirely made up of claiming events as presented under fine conditions at the Latonia course today. Portcodine, B. Creechs consistent gelding and favorite, was the one nosed out by the Whitney five-year-old, and Col. Hatfield, one of four two-year-olds in the field of but six, was third, a length back and three before Le Bruyere. Skirl had the benefit of a bristling three-cornered contest between Le Bruyere, Portcodine and Col. Hatfield for the lead from the far turn to a point well into the main Stretch and wore them down Avith a belated rush as the dash drew to a close. After bearing over in the stretch, Portcodine finished out in rather resolute fashion and just failed to withstand the victors charge. When he bore over, Portcodine pinched back lie Bruyere, which was on the inside throughout, but the latter was quite distressed at the time of the crowding, and it probably had no bearing on the result. The youthful Col. Hatfield, which was making his first appearance of the meeting, was in the thick of the contest throughout and, while tiring, was going steadily behind the two older leaders in the late stages. The feature was- decided on a dull, slow track, and the winner, ridden by H. Bagur, ran the distance in 1:15. He had up 119 pounds,, while Portcodine packed 123 pounds. It was the winners fourth start since he was tried over the jumps at Saratoga in August. EASY FOR BARITONE. E. E. Watsons Baritone, ridden by Tommy May and showing a lot of improvement over his previous effort here, rolled home an easy winner over Nuckols Boy, Banset and nine others at nine furlongs in the fifth race. The victor had the confident backing of his connections and when ready in the final half-mile came through most of the field to win by a good length and with something in reserve. Nuckols Boy enjoyed a brief stay in the lead from the stretch turn until the winner came up in the final sixteenth and, holding on gamely after being headed, Nuckols Boy outlasted Ban-set by a neck. Blind Hills was fourth and Blue Cloud, second choice to the winner, fifth. The latter weakened after entering the final quarter in second position. Sis Agnes, racing for the F. L. B. Stable, made it three in a row for the favorites, when she easily accounted for the third race at three-quarters. This marked her first win at the meeting, but she was solidly backed, and closed one of the shortest priced choices of the day. Sally Irene, second choice, garnered the place award and Lady Ebony raced from a long way back with a belated rush to carry off third over Agatha and the others. BY WIDE MARGIN. After following close to Sally Irene and Whirling the first three furlongs, the winner came around them at the turn and the Jater running saw her hold sway much as she pleased. At the wire her margin over Sally Irene, which tired very badly after reaching the final three-sixteenths, was five lengths. Playing On, carrying the J. O. Whitlow colors and favorite in the betting, administered a sound trouncing to eleven other maiden juvenile fillies in the second race, also at three-quarters. The Whitlow filly came through with too much speed for her rivals and made every post a winning one. Through the stretch she was not fully extended, yet came on to register by five lengths as Bright Chestnut and Lutie Schuster landed second and third in a tight fit, .with Transcript, Migosh and Mrs. Let. Three Bees, the H. P. Headley starter here, was the recipient of confident backing, and the Continued on eighteenth page. C. V. The first race, at three-quarters, for all ages, resulted formfully when Gunfire was returned the winner, yet he had little to jspare over Asphodel, an outsider. Lanier saved third, while Town Limit, which drew more than a scattering of support, went down badly. Gunfire showed the most speed, and after being rated to the stretch, continued well for another furlong before tiring, and it was only by half a length that he outstayed Asphodel, which provided keen contention the entire way. In the final drive Lanier tired, and just lasted for third over Pink Slipper, the most successful of the eight two-year-olds in the field of twelve. O. Laid-ley rode the winner. Trotwood, at better than 38 to 1, got a nose decision over Lady Dean, pronounced choice, in the sixth, also over nine furlongs. They fought it out stubbornly in an extended drive with the winner getting up right at the end. Ten lengths back Belen accounted for third, and she led nine others. Lady Dean, which W. Fronk rushed almost excessively, and Trotwood dominated the race after the field had gone three furlongs, and Belen came up through the final half-mile to outstay the others. Willie Pool had the leg up on the winner, and it was his first winning mount of the meeting. A. B. Gallaher is returning to Lexington with Glynson, Oswego Princess, Whirling, Back Log and Manassas, and later may invade Florida for the Hialeah Park meeting. His colors were seen t Hialeah last winter. C. H. Knebelkamps Thundertone, which spread a foot in his last race, has been sent to Mrs. T. M. Murphys Golden Maxim Farm. Knebelkamp turned Potential and St. Na-zaire over to S. J. Kelly. Mrs. C. A. Marone added the two-year-old filly, Escoba Marie, to the sale of thoroughbreds in training to be held in the Latonia paddock at noon Friday. The Marone horses will be shipped to the farm at the close of this meeting, and Marone will break and prepare five home-bred yearlings for next year. :
