WINDSOR Ont May 9 Herowin a threeyearold gelded son of Herodot which Ji E Smallman claimed from the B B Sta ¬ ble during the Florida campaign turned in a good effort to take the best race on the card at Kenilworth Park today This was a seven furlongs affair for the better class platers M J Sansone furnished the one to be second in Live One and a half dozen lengths back H C Hatchs Sweepstaff was third Broadway Lights was next and Bril ¬ liant Rose led home Small Play to complete the field fieldFrom From the start Herowin leaving from the outside was first to show in front Sweep staff however outran the Smallman three yearold when M Helm took a stout hold on Herowin Live One was racing in third place well before the others which had be ¬ come strung out before the first furlong had been completed completedGoing Going down the back stretch Herowin suc ¬ ceeded in racing into the lead while still under restraint Sweepstaff was still hold ¬ ing a slight advantage over Live One and the others had dropped back badly Leaving the back stretch Herowin increased his lead and was still fighting for his head Live One had supplanted Sweepstaff in the sec ¬ ond place and was under pressure in an ef ¬ fort to catch the leader leaderReleased Released from restraint as the stretch was reached the Smallman colorbearer drew away steadily Live One made a valiant but fruitless effort to gain on the leader but was not good enough and Herowin drew away until he was three lengths to the good at the end Sweepstaff was not unduly urged when he began dropping back though easily taking third from Broadway Lights The latter made up some ground in the stretch stretchThough Though there was a slight increase in the attendance it was still far below any crowd of previous meetings at the Windsor rack rackYoung Young Kitty onetime queen of the Ca ¬ nadianbred handicap ranks and a former Kings Plate winner which was sent to the farm to serve as a brood mare returned to racing and defeated a field of homebred platers in the opening five and onehalf fur ¬ longs dash Carrying the popular black and yellow silks of E F Seagram Young Kitty now in her ninth year smothered her op ¬ ponents with speed winning by four lengths over the wellbacked Aymond another for ¬ mer Plate winner Rock Crest gained third over Acajou one that ran a smashing race to come from far back in the last quarter mile mileNick Nick Wall was astride the Old Koenig mare and after taking the lead in the first furlong raced Childish Talk into defeat and from then on the contest was over as far as the winner was concerned Wall steadied her along and continuing with good speed in the stretch she was never placed under urging urgingBarter Barter benefited by his race a couple of days ago and held on in gamer fashion than usual and proved victor over a half dozen other mediocre platers that vied for honors in the second a dash over the six furlongs distance Barter accomplished his score by threequarters of a length over Joe Macaw while Donny Johnny was third thirdBarter Barter and Stephanus raced out in front for the greater part of the way and when the stretch was reached Stephanus was through and Barter increased his advantage It was straightening out in the stretch that Joe Macaw made his effort He gained ground steadily and though cutting down the winners lead at every stride was un ¬ equal to the task and had to be content with second place Donny Johnny came willingly after racing far back in the early stages and was third thirdTimon Timon performing back to his previous good effort at the meeting was easily best of the half dozen platers that met in the threequarters mile of the third Craigco the choice of the company and supported with confidence finished second with the recent arrival from Maryland Don Tasker taking third thirdStep Step Off gray daughter of Cudgel which races for the Hon Donat Raymond and which narrowly missed victory in her initial essay at the meeting made good in the fourth This was the second event of the afternoon exclusively for Canadian foals foalsThe The winner was well ridden by apprentice Ross Cochrane a youth under contract to Fred Schelke trainer of the Raymond string all members of which incidentally appear to be at top form at the present time Clarry Sea Kale and Pertoxical fought it out for the pacemaking honors and after a half mile Pertoxical called it a day Sea Kale then went to the front only to sur ¬ render command to Clarry which led to within a few yards of the finish Step Off had been farther back early but closing with late speed managed to gain a neck verdict in the final strides stridesLloyd Lloyd Gentry saddled another winner when he sent Siss out to account for the sixth The Hatchowned filly triumphed in handy fashion after carrying the pacemak ¬ ing burden and was two lengths to the good of Fred Almy while Style Corner came with a belated rush to gain third
