May 9 The blue and gold colors of the Braedalbane Stable main ¬ tained by Desha Breckinridge of Lexington and Jouett Shouse of Washington were seen in their first victory of the season when Weston a rugged twoyearold son of Noc ¬ turnal or Sun Flag from Madcap Princess brought them through to a driving score over a band of his age in the Midway Purse the best of todays races at Churchill Downs DownsDespite = Despite a good qualifying performance the winner which was making his second public appearance received light support and his victory was among several sur ¬ prises The most play was given C C Van Meters Stay which finished third two lengths back of First Entry which ac ¬ counted for the second award and John Marschs first time starter Black River Carried out on the turn by the erratic Sora which delayed the start for five minutes and further handicapped by a timid ride Black River had little if any chance He was the second favored youngster from the Marsch barn to suffer defeat defeatRacing Racing outside the leaders entering the stretch and taking a clear lead as Leelarious and Elwawa the early pacemakers fell back near the final furlong the winner came on to defeat First Entry which he blocked within a short distance of the finish by a length First Entry slipped through next to the rail throughout and but for being cut off by the victor probably would have been more of a factor at the end where he led Stay by two lengths Aside from a slight loss of ground Stay had no excuse He withstood Roman Soldiers belated rush just long enough to retain third by a head headYOUTHFUL YOUTHFUL KENTUCKY TRAINER TRAINERWeston Weston is trained by Tom B Young youthful Kentucky horseman and son of the late Milton Young and was ridden by Charles Corbett who also had the mount on one of the earlier winners A large crowd for the day saw the Braedalbane gelding score scoreA A nose finish the first close one of the afternoon resulted in the Tyler Hotel Claim ¬ ing Purse which was the fifth race Little Connelly R L Stivers Hephaistos filly was the winner with the decision against Rally Round Simon which took third led Catino and three others othersAfter After succumbing to the winners chal ¬ lenge in the stretch Rally Round which had set all the pace refused to give up and when Little Connelly tired as the finish neared narrowly failed to retrieve the lead in time to be the winner A stride after the finish Rally Round was in front again Within a few strides of the finish he bumped the winner and it appeared to aid him somewhat somewhatLittle Little Connelly a lukewarm favorite had Lee Humphries in the saddle Rough saddleRough riding prevalent since the open ¬ ing ruined another race when such serious crowding developed soon after the start of the first event that it looked more like a football scrimmage than a horse race For this Epernay John Marschs fast son of Epinard was making his debut but he bore the brunt of the crowding and
