EQUIPOISE AMONG ENTRIES Named for R M Sweitzer and Fran ¬ cis S Peabody Handicaps American Derby to Be Eun at Washington Park June 2 Attracting Much Atten ¬ tion Cavalcade Probable Starter Equipoise C V Whitneys gallant son of Pennant Swinging which is making a de ¬ termined bid to dethrone Sun Beau as the leading money winner of all time may make his Chicago bow earlier than usual this year He has been nominated for the Robert M Sweitzer Handicap and the Fran ¬ cis S Peabody Memorial Handicap two of the most important stakes to be contested at the coming Washington1 Park meeting which will run from May 24 to June 23 inclusive and according to the best informa ¬ tion obtainable he will fill these engage ¬ ments if he trains on as at present presentThe The Sweitzer Handicap Is at the distance of one and oneeighth miles while the Pea body Memorials distance is one furlong farther These two features will be run toward the final part of the meeting so as to give eligibles all the time possible to get fit for them themThe The Whitney connections are overlooking no opportunity to afford Equipoise a chance to add to his purse earnings and as a re ¬ sult he has a busy campaign mapped out for the entire racing year Hard work will not worry him as long as he remains sound and it is a safe wager that trainer Tom Healey will take no chances on knocking him out by asking too much of him himEach Each of the two Washington Park stakes in which Equipoise is entered has an added value of 2500 The Peabody Memorial Han ¬ dicap also carries a handsome silver trophy trophyWith With the running of the 25000 added American Derby slightly more than three weeks away June 2 Chicago racegoers are beginning to show more interest as they see prospects of another open contest along the lines of the Kentucky Derby Cavalcade winner of the Churchill Downs classic is eligible for it and according to trainer Bob Smith will accept provided he meets with no mishaps in the meanwhile Smith is con ¬ fident that his charge will be just as good if not a better horse in the American Derby than he was in the big Downs feature featureIn In the Derby at Washington Park the Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloane representative will race under a different weight adjustment than in the Kentucky Derby The Homewood stake is governed by allowance conditions rangirig from a twelvepound concession for maidens to five pounds for nonwinners of a threeyearold event worth 20000 Another allowance of eight pounds is granted those which failed to annex a threeyearold race of 5000 value valueThis This will put Cavalcade at the top of the heap from a weight standpoint but the Preakness to be decided on next Saturday at Pimlico may bring him a rival in this respect The eight and five pounds allow ¬ ances will find plenty of recipients but it is hardly likely that the American Derby will be contested by many maidens maidensCol Col Matt J Winn who staged the Ken ¬ tucky Derby in a manner that surpassed even his own expectations is back on the job in Chicago looking after affairs in con ¬ nection with the Washington Park meeting and particularly the American Derby He expects the Homewood meeting to show a healthy increase all around this year and he is sanguine that the American Derby will draw more people than for several years past pastGeneral General manager C W Hay continues to receive applications for boxes and clubhouse reservations not only for the American Derby Day but for the entire Washington Park meeting in larger numbers than in any year since economic conditions became so unsettled and they are coming from all directions
