DETROIT TURF NOTES The spring season opens with a sevenrace card featured by the Detroit Inaugural Han ¬ dicap It is for threeyearolds and over and carries a 1500 purse Entries close for the handicap Tuesday and weight and accep ¬ tance will be made Wednesday WednesdayDuring During the fortyone days the piece de re ¬ sistance will be the Detroit Derby Carry ¬ ing a 25000 added value and decided at one mile and threesixteenths the same distance as the Preakness Stakes it is attracting the best of the threeyearolds Nominations for the Derby close Monday and indications point to the leaders of that brigade being among the list of eligibles A glimpse of the list of eligibles reveals that several that were not named for the historic Kentucky Derby are eligible for the Detroit Handicap Following two weeks after the American Derby and a week later than the Belmont Stakes the Detroit Derby has an opportunity of thoroughly deciding the threeyearold supremacy supremacyWith With ideal training conditions prevailing a majority of the horses were on the track Saturday morning The horse colony was increased with the arrival of the Mrs J Zoeller and J A Best stables from Texas the vanning of the Connie Smythe string from Kenilworth and the unloading of the J W Y Martin and R McKeon stables that shipped from Maryland The Zoeller stable is headed by the Jefferson Derby winner Tatanne and contains eleven others Mr Martin brought nine head while the Smythe menage comprises the same number numberAdditional Additional stables to reach here Sunday and Monday will swell the horse colony well past the GOO mark Charles J McLennan racing secretary opened his office Saturday morning and during the day received many stable registrations After a survey of those made out Saturday he stated that he ex ¬ pected a banner field to go postward for the Inaugural Handicap which features the opening day program
