STEP AWAY DISAPPOINTMENT Jamaicas Shortest Priced Favorite Finishes in Last Place Cheap Fields Furnish Sport for Big Crowd at New York Track Rain Threat ens All Day NEW YORK N Y May 14 Featureless racing was offered by the Metropolitan Jockey Club at Jamaica today but the fields were large and though no horses of quality were engaged there were some excitingly close finishes The surprise of the day was the bad race run by Step Away the starter from the Anall Stable She was one of the shortest priced starters of the day but after misfortunes in the running finished last of the ten that started startedThis This was in a six furlong dash for non winners of two races and the easy manner in which the filly had won her previous race at the meeting made the running appear little more than a formality Little could be expected in such cheap company but it was a surprising change of form formRain Rain threatened almost all day and just before the running of the fourth race there was a drizzle that drove the crowd from the lawns It was a big crowd augmented by many who have been racing their horses in Maryland The closing of Pimlico also brought several of the first class riders that had been performing there thereThis This race in which Step Away disappoint ¬ ed went to M Vaccaros Leroline with Sam ¬ uel R Rosoffs Walda racing to second place while L B Counsels Union beat Aubys Boy for third Not much was expect ¬ ed when all starters were entered to be claimed for 1500 1500Walda Walda was the one to set the pace and after opening up a good lead in the early stages she was still clear as she turned into the stretch Leroline had been racing second and in the final furlong when the Rosoff filly tired she raced past to be the winner by a length and a half Walda had saved second place by a like distance distanceStep Step Away was off just a bit slowly but Coucci sent her up rapidly on the outside and for an instant she threatened to catch the leaders Then she ran into some inter ¬ ference and began to drop back Coucci was hard at work on the filly before the stretch was reached but she was unable to improve her position and when he found it was hopeless he eased her up to be last past the line lineThe The Wheatley Stables Carry Over found a band that he could defeat and graduated from the maiden ranks when he beat G D Wideners Jack Low while Red Jug from the Glen Riddle Stable was third The race was at a mile and seventy yards for maid ¬ ens Five responded to the call and of these Carry Over was the choice He was ridden by Kurtsinger on whom Fitzsimmons took a call for the remainder of the season
