Here and There on the Turf Running of the Preakness High Quests Great Race The Added Starter Evil Mrs Runyons Bargain Filly There was some natural disappointment that Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes Cavalcade failed to complete the Kentucky Derby and Preakness double even though it was a sta blemate that beat him a matter of inches at Pimlico Saturday With a jockey of longer experience than Bobby Jones riding High Quest it is probable Cavalcade would have been winner and would have added his name to those of Sir Barton Gallant Fox and Burgoo King the only three that have scored the double doubleWith With A McAtee in the saddle or had even the riders been reversed on the Brookmeade Stable pair with Mack Garner riding High Quest instead of Cavalcade it is probable the Kentucky Derby winner would have been permitted to win the double It was the desire of Mrs Sloane that the son of Lancegaye be the winner but after aii Jones should not be criticized for the fight ¬ ing finish finishIt It must be remembered that High Quest had been forcing the pace all through that long gallop of a mile and threesixteenths He had killed off Time Supply and had held Discovery safe It was natural that taking care of the field in relays would cost an effort and it would have been extremely dangerous to ease any horse after he had done what High Quest had done before the last furlong was reached Jones may have been entirely aware of the fact that Dis ¬ covery was too far back to be a real menace hut it is not well to censure a jockey for riding his horse out vigorously on all occa ¬ sions even though he is only beating a sta ¬ blemate blemateTime Time and again the better horse in a sta ¬ ble has been pulled up at the finish to permit a stablemate to score It is an oc ¬ currence of almost every season but any time a jockey in an effort to have a stable mate win should pull up his mount to result in some other horse being victor he would at once find himself in no end of trouble Jockeys should never be censured for riding out a mount no matter whether or not it is a stablemate that is the contender contenderBefore Before Cavalcade and High Quest went to the post for the Preakness it was known that both Bob Smith and Mack Garner were decidedly high on the Preakness win ¬ ner and without taking an ounce away from Cavalcade it may develop before the end of the season that the son of Sir Gallaliad TIL is the master of the winner of the Kentucky Derby DerbyAnalyzing Analyzing the Preakness proclaims High Quest a remarkable colt Carrying all the pace for that long gallop and under his scale weight of 126 pounds he established a new time record for the Preakness when he ran the distance in 158 and it was just the fraction of a second slower than the track record of 158 set by Gallant Knight two years ago and under a weight six pounds below the scale scaleThe The burden of the pace over such a dis ¬ tance is of great importance and it takes a champion to take the lead and hold it for a mile and threesixteenths with his weight up in such time With the first quarter in 23 the second was run in 24 the third in 24 and the final quarter of the mile in 25 This left him 20 for the final threesixteenths which would indicate that he was still racing strongly after all the fast pacemaking pacemakingThe The next big objective for High Quest is the Belmont Stakes to be run June 9 while Cavalcade is intended for the American Derby which is to be decided at Washington Park Chicago June 2 2High High Quest is also in the Withers at one mile and a colt of his speed is particularly fitted for such a test It is to be run May 26 and would be a natural engagement leading up to the Belmont Stakes which is a gallop of a mile and a half The colt is also engaged in both the Toboggan Handi ¬ cap the opening day feature Wednesday as well as the Metropolitan Handicap There is no good reason for asking him to meet older horses for with his winning penalty he would be required to take up 121 pounds in the Toboggan two pounds over the scale and he would certainly be highly weighted in the Metropolitan The Withers and the Belmont will surely be all that is asked of the son of Sir Gallahad III at Belmont Park and on both his Wood Memorial score and his brilliant performance in the Preakness it would seem that unless Chic straw should prove a stumbling block he has just begun a brilliant season seasonAnd And while discussing High Quest and the Preakness it is unfortunate that Mrs Sloanes colt should have been chosen for a saliva test following his victory Of course the selections are made in Maryland by lot That is two races are chosen each day and the winners of those two races must submit to the examination to discover whether or not a stimulant has been used usedAfter After his gallant performance High Quest should not have been made to go through the annoyance of this saliva test but the lot fell on him and after all had he been ex ¬ cused there would have been censure for the stewards in not having all horses look alike when it comes to the rule on stimulat ¬ ing ingIncidentally Incidentally Bob Smith is one trainer who is not willing to believe that the saliva test is a dependable method of discovering the use of a stimulant The Brookmeade luck was not all good Saturday when Duke Bellizzi second rider of the stable fell from Psychic Bid in the running of the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica At the time of his peculiar and serious acci ¬ dent Bellizzi had a clear lead over his field with the colt It was nearing the stretch turn and his winning chance seemed excel ¬ lent Bellizzi himself was to blame for his fall when in an effort to prevent the colt from bearing out he used both hands on his left rein This naturally threw him off balance and he virtually pulled himself from the saddle In the following race Okapi carried Mrs Sloanes silks to victory in the Flushing Handicap so that without the bad luck in the Youthful it is possible and probable that the silks would have won the two Jamaica specials while High Quest and Cav ¬ alcade were finishing first and second in the rich Preakness With the first of the New York meetings not completed there has come along an added starter and an added starter that was returned the winner This was in the running of the Excelsior Handicap when Mrs John Hertz Watch Him was named as a starter the day of the race raceIn In Maryland and in some other sectors the added starter is barred and it is a rule that is appreciated by the public When the adding of starters is permitted it surely complicates the race for those who make a study of the fields There is no opportunity when this is permitted to adequately weigh the chances of that starter with the others When his name is Sent out overnight as is required in Maryland the publication of his past performances gives this opportunity To bar the adding of horses is surely a rule of importance with the public and it is an ex ¬ cellent one oneThere There might come an occasion when there would be some sort of excuse for the adding of a horse after the entries have been pub ¬ lished but the only one that can be thought of attthis time would be a marked change in the track conditions It is entirely possible that some eligible not named overnight migh move up enough through deep muddy going to have a winning chance That seems to be the only excuse and it is not much of an excuse excuseSuch Such an eligible could be named the day before and should track conditions not be favorable he could always be scratched There is no rule against withdrawing from a special prize but there should be a rule barring added starters Angelic the swift running daughter of In ¬ finite and Rhea that carried the silks of Mrs Damon Runyon to victory in the Youth ¬ ful Stakes at Jamaica Saturday has proven herself a rare yearling bargain bargainBred Bred and sent to the market by William B Miller this miss was purchased at Sar ¬ atoga Springs last August by Mrs Runyon for 700 She showed the silks of this fair sportswoman for the first time in the Florida season and already the colors thanks to the racing of this sweet miss are of much more importance than those of the other DamonPlaters half of the Runyon team Damon Platers have won their way nicely under JDamons silks but it remained for Mrs Run yon to show a stakes winner And this same Angelic is a sturdy miss that may readily go along beating the colts through the season even though there might have been just a little element of luck in the Youthful score
