REVENGE FOR NEEDLE Turns Tables on Polly Rita in Fea ¬ tured Peonies Purse Polymelian Filly Considerably Han ¬ dicapped by Being Blocked on the Turn HOMEWOOD 111 June 11 Joseph E Wideners homebred juvenile filly Needle jarred followers of form in todays fine crowd at Washington Park when she turned the tables on D B Midkiffs Polly Rita to win the Peonies Purse which had the starred position on a typical off day program usher ¬ ing in the third full week of the meeting meetingOtto Otto Harbort riding his second winner of the day brought the daughter of Stefan the Great and Thread to the finish of the five furlongs a handy winner and a length and onehalf before Polly Rita which in turn was a similar distance before T C Wordens Myrtle Brooks BrooksOnly Only three others of which Blessed Again finished in fourth place participated in the dash Except for a flash of early speed displayed by Ima Greenock the trio com ¬ prising the rear half of the field were vastly excelled by the three leaders leadersThe The winner carrying 112 pounds sped over the distance in 100 which marked one of the fastest races at the distance dur ¬ ing the present meeting and rewarded with odds of almost 6 to 1 1CLOSES CLOSES A BIG GAP As th6 winner which was third out of the starting stalls shot to the front ap ¬ proaching the turn Polly Rita had the ill fortune to be blocked and it was a break which no doubt prevented her from proving a stronger factor at the finish When clear she gradually made up ground but Needle had sprinted into too much of a lead and some keen running through the stretch was necessary for her to finish as close to the winner as she did She did not pass Myrtle Brooks until in the final furlong and after heading the Worden filly swiftly widened the distance between them themAlong Along with Polly Rita several other short priced favorites went down to defeat but on other occasions choices were in front an average share of honors going to them be ¬ fore the day was over overBossie Bossie Eye oddson favorite in the bet ¬ ting was unlucky to lose to Vanita in the dash of maiden juvenile fillies that inaugu ¬ rated the afternoons racing They fought it out roughly to the closing furlong as Vanita ridden by Hal Tinker appeared the aggres ¬ sor and many Io6ked for the stewards to disqualify the Clyde Van Dusen filly When Hearing the finish and after Vanita had bumped Bossie Eye Tinker in slapping his mount on the right side of the head above the muzzle several times brought his hand back to such a degree as to cause Bossie Eye to shy and she wavered just enough to surrender the lead in time to lose by a nose Three lengths back Fair Countess drove home in third place Of the four others which started Miss Quick was eliminated at the far turn where she bolted boltedVETERANS VETERANS GOOD RACE 1 Old Martie Flynn the nineyearold Sweep On gelding which carries his years lightly was a pronounced choice to win over ten of the 1000 to 1500 variety and at seven furlongs in the second race Coming through with his usual good performance Martie ap ¬ peared to have the race won when Ondott ridden by D Weitzel who had never pre ¬ viously piloted a winner rushed up to beat him on the post and by a short head Three quarters of a length farther back Broadstep which faltered after making much of the pace filled third place He was five seen in colors for the first time finishin second astride Militia MilitiaGrayback Grayback racing under Mrs Paul Kelleys colors sent the choice players to the payoff windows for the first time when in a thrilling driving finish he captured the win ¬ ners end of the purse in the third race also over seven furlongs Nine started with Unkie Tom accounting for second a half length back and a length and onehalf in the van of Norman D DOtto Otto Harbort riding a welljudged race brought the victor up gradually on the stretch turn and wearing down Unkie Tom appeared ready to draw away The latter Club of which much badlyHeiress was expected failed badly Heiress consistent daughter of Bunting scored the second victory in successive races for the favorites when she carried Albert Sabaths silks to victory over Salut DAmour Pulis Try King and seven others in the fourth race This also was decided over seveneighths with the winner sprinting into command approaching the turn and easily holding sway thereafter After Try King the early leader began to fall back on the stretch turn Salut DAmour provided the chief contention and although unable to seriously menace the victor he held second secure Pulis following three lengths back at the end where the latter had Try King well beaten beatenBlack Black Fool strong second choice to Wirt G Bowman led throughout in the sixth race with the favorite second a length back and five lengths before Platinum Blonde Black Fool reached the stretch with a five length advantage over the choice and al ¬ though he tired badly after a mile H Bagur
