AQUEDUCT MEETING BEGINS Open Range Furnishes Big Upset in Carter Handicap Graham ThreeYcarOId Takes Measure of Halcyon and Okapl Bettlnp King Appears Small NEW YORK N Y June 11 William Grahams Open Range the threeyearold son of Fhalaros and Mazctta was a surprise winner of the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct today It was the opening feature of thia Queens County Jocky Club meeting and the gelding a light weight of the party showed dazzling speed when he ran the six and onehalf furlongs in 118 to take the measure of C V Whitneys Halcyon while Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes Okapl winner of the Toboggan Handicap at Bel mont Park was third The value of this feature has been reduced until its net to the winner was 895 895The The opening of the new meeting was an auspicious one and the crowd was so big that there is some apprehension of how the betting ring will be able to accommo ¬ date the Saturday and holiday attendance attendanceOnly Only five started in the Carter Handicap and it was generally agreed that it was strictly between Okapl and Halcyon and scant consideration was accorded the light weights There was a short delay at the stalls for which Open Range was to blame and the start was a good one oneWar War Stripes was first to show from the machine but Bright Haven and Open Range almost at once raced up to him and closely lapped they ran a first quarter in 23 to open up a lead of three lengths Okapl was in third place after having actually been last to start and Halcyon was in the rear of the leaders leadersBright Bright Haven was not able to keep step with Open Range long and when Litzen bcrger sent the Graham gelding along at his best pace he drew away until he had increased his lead to five lengths Okapl was holding his position and he soon caught Bright Haven and Halcyon from rather a slow beginning was improving his place Litzenberger saving ground in the stretch kept right at his mount and he was still four lengths clear a furlong from the finish and he had run the half In 46 By this time Garner was driving Okapl and Hal ¬ cyon yas gaining fast Halcyon caught the Toboggan Handicap winner In the final fur ¬ long but he could not catch the leader which was past the line winner by alength and a half but doing his best Okapl was four lengths back of the Whitney sprinter and he had readily beaten Bright Haven for third Willis Sharpe Kilmers Suhador showing vast improvement over his performance in the Swift Stakes in which he was beaten ten lengths was winner of the Wood Haven Purse the second best of theday The son of Sun Briar fqrced the pace throughout to win over Anarchy from the Brookmeade Stable and the Wheatley Stables Carry Over beat C V Whitneys Collateral for third thirdSunadqr Sunadqr and Anarchy were the ones to race along in front but as the stretch was reached the Kilmer colt drew away until he was three lengths to the good There Carry Over began to move up while Collat ¬ eral was gaining ground on the outside outsideIn In the final drive Sunador was bearing out badly but Walls kept him going to have him the winner by a length and a half Anarchy after being apparently beaten for second place came again under Garners vigorous drive to beat Carry Over by a length for second place Collateral was another three lengths back while Identify the only other starter had shown nothing in the race raceThe The opening five furlongs dash through the straight course brought a fighting fin ¬ ish with Victor Emanuels Allen Z outgam ing the Wheatley Stables Dasher and at the heels of the son of Epinard Moisson from the Manhassct Stable had a close fit to take third from Boxthorn which raced for E R Bradley BradleyGeorge George D Wideners Sweetbroom a big chestnut daughter of Stimulus and Broom Flower graduated from the ranks of the maidens when she was winner of the five furlongs dash for juveniles that was the third offering While she still seems to need racing education Sweetbroom stood a drive gamely to run down J J Robinsons Jessie D M Third was the portion of the Green tree Stables Cheshire
