Here and There on the Turf Peace Chance a Good Colt Bates Crack at Cavalcade Plat Eyes Record Impressive Chief Cherokee Loves His Mud Year after year few horses start in the Belmont Stakes yet the historic mile and a half special is seldom won by a threeyear old that is other than a topnotcher A not ¬ able exception was last season when Hurry off was victorious but little has been heard from him or those he defeated since Such probably will not be said about the horses which performed in the 1934 running even though it was won by Peace Chance which previously had not had the honor of captur ¬ ing a stakes event As a matter of fact he had performed in only a few races of this class classPeace Peace Chance is a mate of Hurryoff in the stable of Joseph E Widener but no critic can say the latter was as good a year ago as the son of Chance Shot and Peace was Saturday At least those observers who witnessed the Widener colts decisive defeat of High Quest Good Goods and the five other starters will proclaim his performance was vastly superior to that of Hurryoffs and also that of his sire Chance Shot in 1927 when the latter triumphed over Bois de Rose and Flambino FlambinoIn In the running of the mile and a half in 229 Peace Chance established a record for the stake as well as coming within two fifths of a second of Man o Wars mark but the noteworthy part of his performance from a time standpoint was his last quarter in 235 The Widener colt might even have shaded that figure as he was behind High Quest just getting his challenge in full motion when the split at the quarter pole was made Any colt capable of stepping a quarter in better than 24 seconds after tie has been a steady mile and a quarter under 126 pounds must be reckoned as a natural stayer of considerable class classPeace Peace Chance won the Belmont in a man ¬ ner that brings him out as the only horse standing in the way of Cavalcades claim to the threeyearold championship The Bel ¬ mont victor was defeated by Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloanes flashy colt in the Kentucky Derby finishing in fifth postion some six and a half lengths back but Peace Chance had excuses as he was badly sloughed at the start and was well back in the early running yet he made up ground steadily through the final half mile Now comes his convincing Belmont victory and the right to meet Cavalcade for the championship If Peace Chance passes up Saturdays Detroit Derby the Classic at Arlington Park will bring the two together togetherPete Pete Coyne Kentucky horseman who pointed Chance Shot for his Belmont victory deserves plenty of credit for the manner in which he brought out Peace Chance The feeling persisted in some quarters that Peace Chance was neither a stayer nor a weight carrier but there is no doubt now that he can go a route and with at least 126 pounds on his back That he is a fast colt was demonstrated in his first start of the sea ¬ son when he lowered the Churchill Downs record for the mile distance by going in 135 After his Derby outing he performed in two mile dashes at Belmont In the first he was nosed out by First Minstrel and in the second he won by four lengths ever sev ¬ eral capable older horses Peace Chances splendid Belmont race makes the accident to First Minstrel all the more deplorable Failure of Today to start in the National Stallion Stakes cost that valuable juvenile sprint much of its public appeal as a meet ¬ ing between that promising son of Whichone and the capable Plat Eye had been eagerly awaited The National Stallion victory further stamps the latter youngster as one of much class as it was his fifth in six starts and second straight brie in a stakes he previously haying won the Juvenile Plat Eye might have had an unsoiled record be ¬ cause he was bothered in the unusual acci ¬ dent during the running of the Youthful Stakes that cost the life of Duke Bellizzi and second was the best he could do doAn An off track prevented the Thomas Curran Memorial Stakes at Washington Park from being the race it might have been under more auspicious circumstances but it added much to the repuation of Chief Cherokee as a mudder A B Gallahers gelding comes easily by his ability to negotiate heavy go ¬ ing as both his sire Cherokee and dam Pongee were capable softtrack horses as western racing fans should well remember Whether the Chief can handle the same opposition ha humbled nn the Curran when on a fast course remains to be tested He has yet to race over a fast oval
