RHADAMANTHUS FIRST Strangely Marked Son of Pennant Proves Best in Escanaba Purse Triumphs Over Slipper King and andCandescent Candescent by Wide Margin Transpose at Long Odds DETROIT Mich June 11 Rhadaman thus the strangely marked son of Pennant and Nemesis which resembles a pinto pony carried the colors of C V Whitney to an ¬ other Detroit victory when he was much the best of seven other threeyearolds that contested the Escanaba Purse the fifth and principal offering here this afternoon At the end of the six furlongs Rhadamanthus was five lengths before L Haymakers Slip ¬ per King which beat C W Browne Jrs highly regarded Candescent two lengths for the second award awardA A good start was made in the feature and although Slipper King and Red John were the last in motion the winner was away in good stride and A Robertson was content to allow the son of Pennant to follow the pace of Constant Wife and Candescent to the stretch After the end of the half mile Robertson brought the victor around the leaders and disposing of Candescent in the final threesixteenths he drew away to win rf by a wide margin From his belated begin ing and unable to keep up wfth the early pace Slipper King saved ground entering the stretch and his final drive proved too much for the others Under 111 pounds Rhadamanthus which was registering his second success of the year and also of his career ran the distance in 1 1275 He was the second choice in the wagering and paid 10 10BANNER BANNER CROWD PRESENT PRESENTA A banner crowd was present for the open ¬ ing of the fourth week of racing and al ¬ though the clouds hung heavy during the early morning hours no rain materialized and the program was carried out under ideal conditions Light showers Sunday failed to have any appreciable effect on the track and aided in mixing the top sand dressing which was added to the surface after the start of the meeting meetingFavorites Favorites were unsuccessful in the open ¬ ing three races but when Max Hirschs Nocturnlabe scored over seven other maiden threeyearolds in the fourth race it marked the first victory for those held in highest esteem Second and third went to Hal Price Headleys Shuffle Off and Panorama which finished heads apart and four lengths in the wake of the son of Craigangower or Nocturnal and Miamba which were equal choices with the victor victorAlthough Although Cancel was the first under way and made a game effort in leading to the close of the opening quarter H Callahan hustled Nocturnlabe into command leaving the back stretch From there on he drew away from his rivals and Callahan had him under light restraint at the end After Cancel gave up the chase Shuffle Off moved into contention and after a vain effort he was under hard urging in withstanding Panorama which was pinched back at the far turn turnMAD MAD BULL MAKES GOOD GOODMad Mad Bull made good at his first asking under the colors of R P Watts when he got up to beat the lightly regarded Lan at the close of the five furlongs first race Gold Sweep after racing head and head with Lan to the final sixteenth was third While the leaders went out to make a run ¬ away affair of the dash W Snyder saved ground with the son of Toro and Mad Hand and he wore down Lan in the closing strides stridesWhile While Imperial Bob quit badly after a half mile the favored Pish Tush was well up throughout and failed to offer the leaders any serious threat threatTo To Transpose Mrs N Thompsons lo ¬ callyowned threeyearold filly went the honor of paying the longest price of the meeting when she was much the best of ten other platers of the lower grade that competed in the second race Calome was second with Star Flash grouped in the mu tuel field with Single C and the favorite in the betting third Saved back of the pace of Chief Daunt and Star Flash and lucky to escape the rough tactics displayed by Chief Daunts rider the winner came through on the inside to be two lengths before the fastfinishing Calome at the end Star Flash which was impeded while dis ¬ posing of Chief Daunt tired in the final drive Donny Johnny was shuffled back while improving his position ing the lead the winner ridden by F J Baker disposed of him after leaving the back stretch in a nipandtuck duel with Good Aim which held second place through out disposed of the latter after reaching the stretch From his good beginning Piping Hot was carried wide entering the stretch and after being straightened out she came with a belated rush that wore down Good Aim in the final strides stridesApprentice Apprentice C Parvin was suspended for six days for rough riding in the second race at Detroit Monday
