SIXTH STRAIGHT WIN Burning Up Continues on His Vic ¬ torious Way at Homewood J Triumphs Over Slapped in Blade stone Hotel Handicap After Spectacular Contest 4 HOMEWOOD 111 June 13 Rejuvenated Burning Up sixyearold Black Toney geld ing owned by J D Mikel of Illinois ex ¬ tended his winning streak to six races when in his first Chicago appearance of the year he nosed out T C Wordens Slapped in the Blackstone Hotel Claiming Handicap which was the best of todays races at Washington Park The finish between the two geldings was so close that patrons had to await the judges verdict to know the outcome and they were five lengths before Mrs J Grossr mans Chartres which narrowly outstayed Jens Son for minor honors Three others namely Glynson Prince Pest and Hoops took part and they finished in that order Performing under fine conditions and with Ted King the apprentice under contract to the Mikel stable in the saddle Burning Up was obliged to negotiate the distance in the fast time of 137 to register his sixth victory in successive starts Burning Up finished in front in his only two public showings at Arlington Downs and won three engage ¬ ments at Fairmount Park before being shipped here several days ago He has not suffered defeat since the Agua Caliente meeting meetingBoth Both the victor and runnerup were rated off the early pace which was cut out by Jens Son and briskly forced by Glynson Approaching the stretch Slapped astride which Jack Westrope rode a carefully gauged and strong race took up the lead but Burning Up was in near pursuit as they entered the final furlong and in the subse quent drive proved just a bit too much for the Worden colorbearer Chartres came from last at the far turn to be third Jens Son and Glynson both tiring badly The failure of Hoops to prove more of a factor waa the source of some disappointment IDEAL WEATHER CONDITIONS Again the weather was ideal for the sport with a crowd of nice proportions turning out Although the result of the feature vindi cated the judgment of the form players several shortpriced choices went down As some closedin of the less important races also closed in driving finishes the racing was the most mostexciting exciting of the week Racing down the center of the home homestretch stretch the Superior Stables Hyman and the shortpriced choice Lamp Black also Kuvera which finished third fought it out to a thrilling finish in the first race Over coming a big loss of ground the result of being forced wide by the erratic Lamp Black Hyman succeeded to the lead in the final strides winning by a neck as Lamp Black retained second by a half length over Kuvera But for being pinched back in an anattempt attempt to drive between the two leaders Lamp Black and Hyman entering the final finaleighth eighth Kuvera which finished fastest of all might have been the winner winnerBLACK BLACK HELEN IMPRESSES 7 7Black Black Helen an Idle Hour Farm bred daughter of Black Toney and La Troinne was an impressive winner under E R Brad leys white and green colors in the second race for maiden juveniles of her sex She sprinted around Diavoless to the front in the stretch and continuing stoutly won by four lengths and with consummate ease as Spanish Babe was outstaying Diavoless for second The latter faltered badly after reaching the last of the five furlongs over which the eight young racers compared speed speedAlthough Although it was her first test with tha colors up the winner had confident back ¬ ing the odds dropping from 6 to 1 to a little better than 8 to 5 which she returned She was ridden by J Smith who also had the HymanThe mount on Hyman The ever busy Broomshot W F Axtona aged mare raced to her seventh triumph or the year and second of the meeting when she defeated Victorium to the front as Flag Bear ¬ er the early pacemaker shorteneJ his strides entering the final furlong and con ¬ tinuing well was safe from Victorium and Renaissance both of which put forth de ¬ termined finishes finishesCountess Countess Bina scored her fourth victory in as many chances during the meeting when she soundly defeated a small band of twoyearolds in the fourth race Only six opposed the victorious daughter of Cher ¬ okee over the five furlongs with Mabel Krasa racing into second place five lengths back of the winner and a length before Lady Louella Although Mabel Krasa re ¬ ceived the heaviest play neither the whir ner nor Lady Louella wanted for backing backingJ J King sent the winner which was mak ¬ ing her initial appearance under Mrs R A Forshas silks to the front soon after the start and after easily retaining the lead over Mabel Krasa and Brilliant Dee as they alternated in second place during the first four furlongs drew away thereafter Brilliant Dee fell back when near the fin ¬ ish but Mabel Krasa came on in more courageous fashion and held a clear margin over Lady Louella as she flashed past the point of finish The latter began very slowly and while not making up ground on the leaders came through with a reso ¬ lute finish finishThat That trainer M S Skaggs knew what he was doing when he had jockey D R Stuller come here from Fairmount Park to ride the gelding was borne out when Stuller drove Vagabond to a spectacularly gained win over Golden Words Try Fair and others in the sixth race t one mile and an eighth After leading from the start Golden Words barely failed to outstay the rugged Voltage gelding with Try Fair drawing up to finish within a neck of the runnerup No con ¬ tention worthy of note was provided by Captain Danger
