BRIGHT HAVEN EASY WINNER «. — Mahopac Handicap No Contest When Sgt. Byrne Is Withdrawn. ♦ Miss Merriment Props at Start of Empire City Headliner and Then Finishes in Second Place. NEW YORK, N. Y., July 11.— Bright Haven carried the silks of the Sage Stable to an easy victory in the Mahopac Handicap, the feature ottering of the Empire City Association at its Yonkera track today. It was a dash of five and three-quarters furlongs and there was not much to it as a contest when Sgt. Byrne was withdrawn when it was discovered that he was coughing during the morning. This left only three to perform and when Miss Merriment, the Dorwood Stable starter, got away badly that also prevented the contest being a good one. Miss Merriment took second place from Flint Shot, a Maemere Farm starter. Cassidy had trouble with the three and then, when Miss Merriment propped as she left her stall, she was badly handicapped. Merritt rushed Bright Haven away in full stride and there was no time during the race that he was threatened. Merritt took no chances and hustled the son of Bright Knight along, and he was still two lengths clear at the end. After her slow beginning, Miss Merriment did not show her accustomed speed and, while she quickly moved into second place, she could reach no closer and she was being hard driven at the end to beat Flint Shot only a length. A day of delightful weather brought out a crowd of goodly proportions and there was the usual Westchester County interest taken in the different races. Max Hirsch sent out a smart filly when he saddled Uppermost for Morton L. Schwartz in the opening dash, at five fur-I longs. It was the first start for the daughter of Cohort and Summit, and she showed abundant schooling when she left fast and I made a show of the maiden misses that opposed her. T. H. Somervilles Pretty Night raced to second place, with Cloud Sweeper, from the Branncastle Farm Stable, beating Corinne Dailey for third* Max Hirsch made his score two in a row when Little Lie was winner of the second race, another dash for the juveniles, but over the five and a half furlongs route. This filly was ridden by the little apprentice, C. Rosengarten, who has hnd Irttls ! experience, but he made no mistakes with the daughter of Sickle and Fib and. aftei following C. H. Knebelkamps Below Zero to the stretch, she drew away in the last fur-. long to win going away by two lengths. A great finish marked the third race, and it gave Lee Humphries his second winning i mount of the day when he scored with Max-j well Howards St. Stephens. George Schm-nels Aileen C. was lapped on the son of My Play at the line, and Mrs. Yosts Grannys Trade was only another neck away to take third from Instigator. Lee Humphries brought home his third , winner in the fifth race when he scored | with J. A. Coburns Parity. This one scored I over Clonard, which raced for the Maemere I Farm Stable. William B. Millers maiden I Infinitate was a close third, beating Big | Show for that part of the purse. The final race of the day went to W. E. I Jones Sunny Tom, which scored in easy fashion over Matt Colfords Chimney Top while third place went to W. Newhoffs I Dunfern. The winner was close to the pace from the start, took an easy lead whea called upon and won with speed in reserve. He was a strong choice. ♦
