Cavalcade may not have Peace Chance among his opponents in the Classic at Arlington Park Saturday, which may be fortunate for the Brookmeade Stable star, as events will prove some time during the season* Joseph E. Wideners crack colt isnt definitely out of the 5,000 mile and a quarter special as trainer Pete Coyne and the veterinaries are doing everything within their power to have Peace Chance a well horse by Saturday. The wrench suffered by the colt was only a slight one, Coyne reported, and already has responded mar-velously to treatment. While Peace Chance may be compelled to miss a workout in preparation for the Classic due to his accident, he may be expected *g* have condition enough to run his race if Jr the knee trouble has been cleared away. The son of Chance Shot and Peace has done a lot of work since winning the Belmont Stakes at a mile and a half, his trials including a fast mile at Belmont Park shortly before he was shipped and then a good mile and a furlong workout between races Saturday at Arlington. Should Peace Chance be unable to start in the Classic, the race will lose some of its interest, naturally, but the presence of Cavalcade in the field is certain to insure Arlington Park one of its greatest crowds because the triple Derby winner has thousands of admirers who will be at the north side course just to see him under silks, regardless of whether his opposition is ordinary or whether he is in a battle for the championship. Peace Chance or no, Cavalcade has his work cut out for him, in the Continued on seventeenth page. HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. opinion of trainer Robert A. Smith, who has made every effort to have the son of Lance-gaye in his very best form. Racing has a future in Kentucky judging by the announcement of Churchill Downs, Inc., that the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes will be renewed in 1935. Nominations to the mile event, for two-year-olds, offered annually in the fall, will close next Wednesday. It will have ,000 added and its gross value should reach the 5,000 mark. This event has been one of the most popular of the fall season in Kentucky ever since it was inaugurated in 1920 and every year has seen a notable field of juveniles competing. This is shown by the roll of winners and their leading contenders. Perhaps the greatest duel ever staged by two-year-olds occurred in the 1930 running of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes when Twenty Grand defeated Equipoise by a nose ofter the two had fought it out head and head from the top of the stretch. The time of the race was 1:36, which marked a new track record as well as being the fastest ever run by a juvenile. Tryster was the first winner of this race and following him were Startle, Enchantment, Wise Counsellor, Master Charlie, Canter, Valorous, Reigh Count, Clyde Van Dusen , Desert Light, Twenty Grand, Kakapo, The Darb and Mata Hari. Good horses beaten in the race included Grey Lag, Mad Play, Chilhowee, Bostonian, Vito, Gallant Knight, Equipoise, Discovery and Dynastic. Victories of Reigh Count, Clyde Van Dusen and Twenty Grand has caused -the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes to be known as an index to the probable favorite in next springs Kentucky Derby. Each of these three horses were warmly supported in the three-year-old special as were Mata Hari, Discovery, Desert Light and Gallant Knight, which also had been prominent in renewals of the juvenile race. As the latter contest is at a mile, it gives a good line on the prospects of its contestants as stayers. Merchants of Saratoga Springs and also proprietors Of the horse stores there, probably are the only ones thankful for the epidemic of coughing which struck the New York tracks a month ago. So many young horses were put out of commission by the sickness that their trainers had to alter their plans considerably. As a consequence more stables than is customary are reaching Saratoga Springs so far in advance of the meeting so the thoroughbreds may have the benefit of the cooler atmosphere and the health giving qualities of the water. Among the prominent establishments that are or will be early arrivals at the Spa are those of Sanford Stud Farms, C. V. Whitney, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt and E. R. Bradley. The mighty Equipoise is due there over the coming week end to complete the growing out of his much-publicized new hoof. «.
