!. i I STAMFORD PARK OPENING Live One Beats Spey Crest in Sensational Finish in Feature Attraction of Inaugural Card: NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. July 21.— In one of the most thrilling finishes witnessed in Canada this year, Live One, bearing the silks of A. J. Sanson e, conquered a rather good band to achieve his first success of the Canadian season when he accounted for the mile and one-sixteenth of the Stamford Park Handicap, which served as the principal offering for the introductory day of the Belleville Driving and Athletic Clubs seven-day meeting here today. Opposed by four others, of which E. F. Seagrams Shady Well was top weight under 115 pounds, the winner, under the energetic F. Dougherty, earned a nose verdict at the conclusion of the journey to defeat W. H. Wrights Spey Crest, considered one of the best of th* home-breds. Four lengths in the wake of the fighting leaders came Shady Well, the only one of her sex that was engaged; then followed Fall Apple and Finalist to complete the small but select field of five. As expected in the feature, Spey Crest dashed out to lead the way and P. Remitlard was preserving the Wright colorbearers speed when he permitted him to go along under stout restraint. Live One, racing more kindly than usual, was following at his heels, while Shady Well, on the inside, was holding third place, after encountering some trouble going to the turn. For the first six furlongs no change in these positions took place, although it was evident that Live One could cut down the leaders margin at the first asking. Watting until well around the turn before challenging the pacemaker, Dougherty quickly sent his mount to Spey Crest and from the five-sixteenths post until the finish the pair raced as a team, with Live One proving the gamer to earn the decision. Ideal conditions prevailed and a banner attendance was on hand for the opening. The sport was of excellent variety and the racing produced several exciting finishes.
