H., July 21.— An upset marked the running of the Hampton Cup Handicap, Saturdays feature offering at Rockingham Park, when Sea Fox, consistent performer from the F. A. Carreaud stable and a recent arrival here, ran his list of consecutive victories to four by taking down the ,810, the winners portion of the ,000 added prize. The Man o War gelding reached the close of the nine furlongs better than a length to the good of C. V. Whitneys stretch running Collateral. Teralice, hitherto unbeaten over the Rockingham ark racing strip, had his winning streak interrupted when the best the son of Terry could do was finish third, in advance of the S. W. Labrot filly, Greyglade. Wheatleys Stables Dark Secret and Fleam, from the Belair Stud, were supported to the exclusion of the others, but failed utterly in the running. Fleam managed to finish back of the Labrot miss, while Dark Secret was last of the company to cross the line. The field was a well mannered one at the post with the lone exception of Waylayer, which contributed solely to the delay of more than six minutes before the start was effected. Greyglade was first out of the stalls fol-. lowed by the eventual winner. Sea Fox managed to get to the front before the first turn was reached. Greyglade was next, while Dark Secret was right there and Dark Winter was racing along outside of the Wheatley representative. Down the back stretch Sea Fox continued to make the running. The Labrot miss was his closest pursuer and just when it appeared that Dark Secret would move up he started suddenly to falter. Saunders had been steady-[ ing Fleam along and moved up when called upon on the inside. Collateral was trailing, while Sarada was just in front of the Whit-, ney colt. Greyglade moved up to challenge the leader but was held safe. Fleam moved up but found the pace of the winner too much, and midway of the turn was placed under urg-l ing in an effort to hold her position. Schaefer had been working his way up gradually with Teralice and for a time ap-f peared ready to go to the leader. Collateral had started to show improved speed and was picking up the trailers. Dark Secret was plainly through and was dropping back steadily. Sea Fox was still clear straightening out for the run to the finish. Grey-3 glade had given her best and Teralice, after passing the furlong pole, had succeeded in racing into second place. Collateral had moved up and was in the middle and on the outside. Fels was still holding Sea Fox together cleverly, and though Collateral managed to overtake the Bartelstein color-bearer to gain the place never was in a Continued on nineteenth page. ■ * " F r v .. * s * c £ I J ■ * i ; [ , | i I ! Another huge crowd journeyed out to witness the sparkling program of sport that was down for decision. The weather continued hot and sultry. A Wax, after many attempts, finnaly left the ranks of the non-winners when, under I severe pressure, he managed to hold on . I long enough to capture the initial offering of the day. This was a test of five furlongs, and it brought together a field of twelve maiden juveniles. Pressing the winner clos- f est at the close and beaten a neck, Home Loan was second three lengths in advance of Tiger John, which earned the show position. . Wax, hustled into a prominent position early, took the lead after leaving the back stretch, shook off Tiger John and drew clear. Home Loan, another which had been I prominently placed from the beginning, closed with good energy in the last furlong and, though overtaking the winner at every j stride at the close, was not quite good enough. Sweepogan, the favorite, broke slowly and, though moving into fourth place, never was able to seriously endanger the j j leaders. A spirited finish came with the running I of the second race, -at six furlongs, when j Twidgets, making her seventh start of the J current session, was along to defeat Lerack by a neck, and Yancey was a close third , before Hobnail. Lerack, hustled into command in the open- ! ing stages, never was able to draw clear. Twidgets was attending the pace closest. Hobnail was racing along in third place and Paddock was prominently placed. Allen nursed Lerack along in front, with Twidgets never far away. Paddock dropped back badly after leaving the back stretch. Inside the furlong post Maschek placed the win-! , ner under punishment. The filly, respond- j ing gamely, drew even with Lerack within a few strides. The pair fought it out de- , terminedly, with the filly gaining a slight advantage at the wind-up. Yancey had loomed up on the outside and through the stretch was catching the leaders at every stride. Westys Duke raced to a rather easily attained victory Jn the five furlongs of the | third offering. Buy Straight was the one i to follow the winner over the line, and third place fell to the lot of Rustic Joe. The well-supported choice, Hardatit, proved a disappointment, finishing in ad- j vance of but cne of the field. The Baroni . filly held to the forward position in the j opening three furlongs, but dropped back | steadily through the stretch. Westys Duke had the speed of the party and cut out all the running and, but for a j I brief period nearing the stretch, when Pestle loomed up only to bear to the extreme outside, was never to receive a threatening challenge. Buy Straight, which delayed the start by unseating her rider and galloping back to the clubhouse, closed with good speed in the final drive and had little trouble in taking her share of the purse. Rustic Joe held on well under punishment through the stretch. Pestle, after racing wide, recovered i gamely and was beaten but a scant head for the shew position. Strenuous, winner of the six furlongs of the fourth, completed a double for apprentice j H. Hughes and trainer J. L. Roberts, both ! sharing in the triumph of Wax in the open- ing dash. Polyfon, the favorite, was second i and Silverdale took the show position over Paper Profits. Jaz Age began faltering after having led the field for the first quarter mile. Strenuous then went to the front. Polyfon moved into second place and for the remainder of the way the leading pair held to their respective positions, with Hughes having the Stimulus miss under pressure the entire length of the stretch to hold a length ad-vantage 1 at the finish. Jaz Age, after flattering by establishing the early running, quit badly and landed back in the ruck. , Silverdale, racing on the outside, barely I held third from the even-going Paper Profits. ♦
