July 21.— The first horses to enter Rhode Island in more than twenty years for racing with legalized wagering arrived here today and were quartered in the new stables at Narragansett Park. Track officials were surprised when two vans, carrying six horses, rolled into the course. Entry clerk Ben Holmes had set the first of next week as the receiving date, but it was decided to put up the horses at once. The arrival of the horses caused Holmes some consternation. He had issued a warning to owners not to ship until next week, but the Baltimore group had not received the notice. Because the horses had been en route almost two days, temporary quarters were allotted them. They will not be able to exercise until Monday, when Harry Kees, boss track man, opens the track. The horses owned by William Shewbridge, R. Russell and Earl Sherman, all of Balti- more, were transferred from the Syracuse Fair Grounds. With the caravan came the first jockey to register officially at the track, Herbert Lauch, who rides for Jim Arthur and wa3 astride several winners at Syracuse. Lauch, who will be 24 years old tomorrow, has been riding four years. He came here to inspect the plant. He said it exceeded all his ex- pectations. Shewbridges trainer, William M. Grater, a veteran of the turf, winked slyly as he discovered that his horses had been the first to reach the track. "Some of them will be first in the races, too," he drawled. "This will be one of the fastest tracks in the country." 0 _
