ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 21.— With candidates for the rich Arlington Futurity, with an expected gross value of 0,-000, qualifying in the Oakton Purse today and two events on Mondays program, interest in Arlington Parks closing feature is steadily mounting. This years running of the six furlongs event, to which the Arlington Park Jockey Club adds 5,000, promises to have a large starting field, as a score of possible starters is indicated at the present time. A number of promising youngsters are being fitted for the event, but not one has shown enough superiority to scare out some of the others. A true East versus West battle will ensue in the Futurity, as this section has its share of fast juveniles ready to clash with the representatives of such eastern owners as Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, William R. Coe, Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane and the Warm Stable. Westerners having formidable candidates for the Futurity include Brownell Combs, Dixiana, Jack Howard, Elmer Dale Shaffer, Mrs. Roy Carruthers, J. A and H. Scheitler, John Marsch, Thomas C. Worden, John J. Coughlin and the Milky Way Farms. Today, crack juveniles sent here by C. V. Whitney from Belmont Park, displayed siz-, zling speed this morning when he went a quarter in :22%, three-eighths in :34%, half in :47% and five-eighths in 1:00%. Black Mail attempted to keep up with Today, but was not successful. Cannons Roar, Man o War colt owned by Alderman Coughlin, exhibited good speed when he worked five and a half furlongs in 1:07. He went the quarter in :23Vs and half in :47%. He is due to race Monday with such other Futurity eligibles as Gallaclay, Step Aside, Conte and Black Mail. This will be the third running of the Arlington Futurity, which took the place of the Post and Paddock Stakes in 1932. Ladys-man won in 1932, beating Technique and Pomponius. Last year Far Star triumphed at the expense of Hadagal, Singing Wood and other fast juveniles.
