the Arlington Lassie Stakes Toro Nancy duplicated the feat of Dixianas Far Star which had done the same thing last year She also gave her owner his second straight stakes victory of the meeting as Riskulus accounted for the Arlington Handicap a week ago It was an allCalifornia victory as both trainer E L Fitzgerald and jockey Bobby Jones hail from that state The latter also won the event on Ladysman two years ago agoOUTSIDER OUTSIDER IN BETTING BETTINGThe The only maiden left in the field of ten Toro Nancy was one of the outsiders as the large crowd centered its support on Albuquerque and St Bernard with Today and Nellie Flag also coming in for consider ¬ able betting strength Because of being a nonwinner Toro Nancy carried low weight of the field 112 pounds poundsThe The victress was always a factor in the six furlongs dash Jones having her away in her stride from an excellent start Albu ¬ querque dashed away to set the pace as had been expected and he led down the back stretch with a length and a half to spare as he completed the opening quarter in 22 Toro Nancy was at his heels however and going smoothly while St Bernard Good Gamble and Today were not far away awayOn On the turn Toro Nancy responded to Jones urging and slowly gained on Albu ¬ querque but did not draw up on even terms with him until after the field had turned into the stretch At that point Today was in third place with St Bernard fourth and Special Agent fifth fifthWith With the field straightened out in the stretch Jones called on his mount for every ¬ thing she had and she responded by bound ¬ ing to the front Reaching the furlong post she had drawn clear by two lengths St Bernard had slipped into second position on the inside as Albuquerque tired while Today was third with Special Agent fourth and driving hard on the outside outsideIn In the final stages Toro Nancy tired but Jones kept hard at work on her and she held command to the end St Bernard also was driven to his utmost by Don Meade but he just managed to hold second place from Special Agent which finished strongest of all Today was fourth tiring in the last few yards and then followed Preeminent Prince Splendor Nellie Flag Albuquerque Gallaclay and Good Gamble GambleBRED BRED BY OWNEK Toro Nancy was bred by her owner and is a daughter of Toro winner of the Amer ¬ ican Derby in 1928 and Viva America which was third in the Kentucky Derby in 1918 She is a member of the first crop of her sire which died not long ago This was her third start she having finished second in her first effort to Good days sport from the Post and Paddock Club and enclosure sections sectionsApprentice Apprentice Dublin Taylor gave another one of his brilliant rides when he piloted the Chappel Brothers Deets Campfire to a clever victory in the opening race which engaged sprinters of the lower grade in a dash at threequarters The winner over ¬ looked in the betting paid the liberal divi ¬ dend of 2416 for 2 In second place and half a length back came Aliens which just lasted to nose out Infinity The start was a good one and it was no tune until Buddy Haas had Polvps Pride in front and Aliens indulged him in the pacemaking for a quarter then supplanted the former as they passed the halfmile pole As they approached the stretch Aliens shook off Polvos Pride and then Deets Campfire came to the fore They staged a bitter duel for supremacy with the latter getting the verdict while Infinity came with a rush to garner third place placeA A small field of plater twoyearolds met in the second race which resulted in a de ¬ cisive win for the Rookwood Farms Ima Greenock her second success of the meet ¬ ing The winner strongly supported was among the choices when the field lined up for the start After the first Chicago victory of the day when he finished in front of Pancoast Jens Son Mr Joe and three others in the fourth race The victor outgamed his strongest rivals in a drive and the finish brought all in the crowd to their feet At the end of six furlongs Alcee Richard who was riding his second winner in successive races had the Nash gelding a short neck before Pancoast which in turn was only a nose better than Jens Son With Mr Joe missing third award by a mere head the finish was one of the most stirring of the day Although Pancoast was the fa ¬ vorite the winner had a big
