Famous Resort City to Entertain on Lavish Scale Predict Great Racing Sleason Flash Stakes and American Legion LegionHandicap Handicap Opening Features SARATOGA SPRINGS N Y July 28 New York comes to its most delightful rac ¬ ing season of all the year with the opening of the Saratoga Association meeting Monday With the new order of things and racing conducted under the provisions of the Craw fordBreitenbach law the little resort city and often referred to as the Ascot of America will come back to many of the de ¬ lights of the prosperous days before racing was dealt such a severe blow by adverse legislation Elaborate preparations have been made for a big meeting meetingFor For the opening card the bright and particular feature is the Flash Stakes an old prize for the juveniles that had its first running away back in 1869 It is a dash of five and a half furlongs to which 3500 is guaranteed and from the 111 nominations that were obtained eleven were named through the entry box boxOf Of these Bud Stotler has two in Bachelor Dinner and Bright Banner to race for Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt Matt Brady has two in Mrs James Austins Supreme Court and Polar Flight and James Healy will depend on Hows Chances and Old Story which race for Mrs John Hay Whitney Willis Sharpe Kilmer has for his hope the good unsexed son of Tryster and Simpatica Try Sympathy and the Greentree Stable has chosen Cheshire from among its eligibles The others are Cakewalker from the Sage Stable William Woodwards Fitter Pat and J H Louchheims Ted Husing For a con ¬ siderable time these various eligibles have been training well over the course and it is probable each one will be seen under racing silks silksATTRACTIVE ATTRACTIVE SETTING SETTINGA A companion feature to the Flash that is down for decision is the American Legion Handicap a dash of seven furlongs with nine named to start The field is a repre ¬ sentative one and while there is a threat that the going may not be at its best a good contest should result A steeplechase is carded and the setting for these races is an attractive one though some trouble was experienced in filling the opening day card cardThe The original fourth race a claiming affair of a mile was declared off and to round but the card a sixfurlong dash was sub ¬ stituted with claiming conditions While an abundance of horses are on hand and the reservations have exhausted the stabling the horsemen did not show a proper re spo nse to the overnight offerings It is Bible the heavy rains of Friday night arid Continued on twentyfirst page SARATOGA THROWS OPEN ITS GATES MONDAY Continued from first page the threat that the going might be heavy Monday may have had its effect but what ¬ ever the reason the result was the same sameWhile While the Flash is naturally the big event of the opening as always there is great interest in the American Legion Handicap and the field named to perform assure its being a great race Should the going be muddy as is threatened Singing Wood win ¬ ner of the Futurity of last year for Mrs John Hay Whitney will move up consider ¬ ably The son of Royal Minstrel has been training well and seems to be on edge for the funning funningBlack Black Buddy from the Greentree Stable and for a time champion of the 1933 juve ¬ niles is to give Singing Wood a pound but is in well under 117 pounds C V Whitney is represented by Jabot and Joseph E Wid ener has a fast one to bear his silks in Sickle Pear Edward R Bradley Barn Swallow will carry the white silks with the green trimmings and the W R Coe hope is Black Queen another fast one oneWhile While the steeplechase for the opening day has only attracted the entry of four horses they are of a quality to suggest an interesting contest over the short course The four are Irish Bullet under the top weight of 152 that races for F Ambrose Clark Silverskin which races for Rigan McKinney takes up 142 pounds and has been schooling exceedingly well the San ford silks will be carried by Frolic II and the other is Rock Lad light weight of the party under 137 pounds poundsNot Not since the gopd old days of some twentyfive or thirty years ago has there been the same preseason activity in the little resort city Not in years has there been the same demand for cottages and the rents went up a bit by reason of this demand The natives to whom the month of August is the one of all the year that means so much are jubilant over the prospects for a big season and there is an air of op ¬ timism everywhere Many of the night clubs have made additions to their quarters in anticipation of the increased crowds and new demands At Rileys one of the old ¬ est of the lake resorts there have been marked improvements and enlargements and an evidence was had of the wisdom when the opening a week ago was a sur ¬ prisingly profitable one oneWhile While each year there is always a doubt as to just what attitude will be taken by the authorities in the matter of latitude af ¬ forded these clubs the general impression is that Saratoga Springs will come close to being wide open for the season seasonThe The passing of prohibition has made a vast difference to the resort city and that alone will play its part in a season where the big objective of every one is amuse ¬ ment entertainment and more amusement and entertainment entertainmentThese These are side lights to the season but they always mean much to the success of any meeting of the Saratoga association It is a pleasure seeking crowd and the more entertainment that there is offered the greater crowd is always attracted attractedAt At the time of the closing of the entries there seemed little chance to hope for any ¬ thing but at least a slow track for the open ¬ ing Monday and should any more rain fall the going will be heavy But even though the field was soft this morning schooling was permitted over the main course and a number of jumpers put through their paces The number of steeplechasers on hand would suggest that such races will not want for material materialAs As in other years the first race will be called to the post at three oclock while the entries will close at ten oclock with a privilege of scratching down to eight until noon noonDr Dr Catlett in charge of the saliva tests for the state racing commission was an early visitor to the track today He inspected the box in which these tests are to be con ¬ ducted and expressed himself as pleased pleasedJust Just back from a trip to France where the saliva tests have been brought to a greater degree of perfection than anywhere else he said that while abroad chemist Mor ¬ gan learned much in the methods of making the tests of saliva arid that it will be pos slbleto discover the use of any stimulating drug
