end five lengths to the good of Thursday a re ¬ cent arrival from New York that performs in the interest of S L Burch S W La brots Greyglade the light weight of the party was third before Teralice The favor ¬ ite Dark Secret was next then came Khorasan while Ridgeview was last to com ¬ plete the field when Sea Fox broke down Fes dismounted before reaching the finish line lineThe The triumph of Roustabout added 5400 to his earnings the victors portion of the spoils Dark Secret was first to show from the start Saunders then took him an hand content to gain a prominent position Sea Fox then went out to make the running and reaching the back stretch was just showing in advance of the Labrot filly Dark Secret and Thursday were racing in advance of Roustabout RoustaboutIt It was approaching the halfmile ground that Sea Fox started to drop back suddenly Greyglade then assumed the lead and Thursday began to move up on the outside Saunders elected to move along on the in ¬ side with the favorite and when Sea Fox started dropping back was caught in a pocket and taken up sharply Robertson was still restraining the Whitney colt and did not ask for improved speed until after making the far turn When asked for his best Roustabout soon caught the leading filly and before reaching the last turn was clear Thursday had also moved up and succeeded in supplanting Greyglade from the place as the stretch was reached reachedIN IN HAND AT FINISH FINISHOnce Once in the lead Roustabout drew away rapidly and Robertson had him in hand at the finish Thursday continued deter ¬ minedly and though never able to get within striking distance of the winner enjoyed an advantage of a half dozen lengths over Greyglade GreygladeDark Dark Secret after suffering his mishap was unable to recover though subjected to punishment in an effort to improve his position positionThe The Concord Handicap for twoyearolds was one of the supporting features of the day a test at six furlongs for a purse of 1500 It witnessed a frontrunning victory for H T Archibalds Candy Prince The Westy Hogan colt finished threequarters of a length to the good of Prosecutor from the W H Gallagher string while Wood F Axtons Paradisical was the one to take third Blackbirder regarded as the out ¬ standing juvenile development of the cur ¬ rent meeting had to concede chunks of weight to each of the other starters when he was burdened vith 124 pounds How ¬ ever after beginning well the Bostonian gelding dropped back badly but moved up again on the far turn and finished with good speed speedCandy Candy Prince took command in the first few strides and was soon a length in the van of his closest pursuer Prosecutor Saunders steadied him along and Prosecutor was chasing after him throughout the en ¬ tire race The two leaders dominated the running until the last stride Paradisical never worse than third at any stage of the running held her share of the purse safe from Grandpas Boy BoyBlackbirder Blackbirder had managed to race into fifth place and was running strongly at the end The contest was run in a driving rain and despite Blackbirder being unable to reach the leaders his was a worth while performance performanceSOBEEHA SOBEEHA OVERLOOKED OVERLOOKEDA A secondary offering on the brilliant clos ¬ ing days program the five and onehalf furlongs of the Boston and Maine Handicap was offered This dash carried a purse of 2000 and brought out eight good sprinters of which Mrs E McCuans Sobieha proved best in the sloppy going She was overlooked in the prerace calculations to return the substantial sum of 1820 The Pelican from the J D Mikel string got up in the final stride to take second place from the pacemaker F A Griffiths Cutie Face FaceA A torrential downpour descended while the field was at the post and did not subside until the race had been run runThe The start was a good one and in the first sixteenth Cutie Face took the lead All Forlorn was pressing her closely while The Pelican raced along in third place just showing the way to the winner Black Hand had begun in a tangle and was well back as was March Step StepThe The leaders continued their duel until a furlong from the finish Cutie Face was showing the way by a narrow margin and Sobieha had raced into third place The Pelican was right there The Sir Gallahad mare responded to the sting of the whip and inside the last sixteenth was in com ¬ mand Cutie Face was sticking to her task in game fashion but right at the end the J E Widener castoff dropped his nose in front in the final strides to take second place placeCharacter Character one with well known liking for the slippery going came in for some volume of play but failed to cut any serious figure in the running runningFlying Flying Don reveling in the muddy going proved better than the eleven other sprinter platers that matched their speed in the opener at threequarters Hasty Belle was second and third fell to Mynah MynahHughes Hughes alert at the post had the winner away in front He set the pace through the opening quarter closely attended by Suspi ¬ cious while Hasty Belle held to third place Hughes eased back slightly permitting Sus ¬ picious to take a slight lead after a half mile had been run Hughes waited with the winner until straightening out for the run to the finish He brought the gelding to the center of the track roused him re ¬ peatedly and was in front in a couple of strides Suspicious dropped back and Hasty Belle raced into second and Mynah after passing the furlong post was third Hughes kept Flying Don under a vigorous hand ride and drew out into a lead of more than two lengths Maschck managed to keep Hasty Belle going long enough to stave off Mynah MynahAnother Another wellsupported choice made good when Old Baldy triumphed in the second offering This race engaged a field of ten sprinting platers under claiming conditions to race five and a half furlongs Erech lightly regarded was the one to follow the Polymelian gelding over the line and Monks Star was easily best of the others othersOld Old Baldy one with a well known liking for the soft going left the post with the leader Bally Bay He gained command after passing the threefurlong post and drew into a daylight advantage Monks Star raced up approaching the stretch and the early pacemaker started dropping back Erech outpaced early was improving his position gradually and entered into the con ¬ tention after reaching the stretch stretchOld Old Baldy continued with good speed through the stretch but Lynch was taking no chances and rode him briskly to the end Erech had closed with good late speed but was forced to accept defeat by a length and Monks Star was three lengths to the good of Flaghorn FlaghornA A stirring finish resulted from the mile and a sixteenth of the sixth when Allenf ern came from the rear of the pace in the stretch to earn a neck advantage over Boocap while Aymond trailed along in third place Aymond established the running with Boo ¬ cap pressing him closest Boocap succeeded in wearing down Aymond for the lead be ¬ fore the stretch was reached and drew clear Parke made his effort after straight ¬ ening out for the run home and gaining at every stride in the last furlong was along in the closing strides
