Here and There on the Turf Equipoise After Western Special May See Action Late in August Better Yearling Prices Likely Taylor Makes Good on Big Time Cavalcade or no Cavalcade but new hoof permitting Equipoise has but one objective now in tne mind of his owner Cornelius Whitney and that is the Santa Anita Handi ¬ cap to oe run at the new Los Angeles track February 23 with a purse of 10U000 The special meeting with the threeyearold champion is only in the conversational stage but the rich event at the new western course has been detinitely arranged and owner Whitney sees in it the opportunity for Equi ¬ poise to make one last shot at major money before he is retired to the stud studHis His hoof having grown out sufficiently to hold a shoe Euipqoise has been asked for speed by trainer Thomas J Healey for a week now and if everything goes well as now seems likely the handicap champion will gradually increase his work until his connections hope he will be ready for the colors late in the Saratoga meeting It is out of the question to think that Equipoise will be ready for the Saratoga Cup or even the Jockey Club Gold Cup two weeks later but with no mishaps Healey should have him ready for campaigning over the middle distances in another four or five weeks weeksRegardless Regardless of whether he earns another nickel this year or not Equipoise can jump ahead of Sun Beau to be the worlds leading money winner by victory in the Santa Anita Handicap With 100000 added the Cali ¬ fornia race cliould be worth at least 75000 and perhaps more to the winner Such a sum would put the veteran son of Pennant and Swinging well over the 400000 mark Even if he trains smartly for the race how ¬ ever Equipoise has still to run around the course to win and he may find his opposi ¬ tion quite dangerous Robert A Smith trainer of the Brookmeade Stable is one of the other horsemen with designs on the race Cavalcade probably is not his hope but a colt named High Quest should give the Brookmeade folk pretty good representa ¬ tion tionDr Dr Charles H Strub directing head of the Los Angeles Turf Club who is now in the East in behalf of his track says the hundred thousand event will be offered as scheduled He is not quite so sure now one very rich race is better for his track than several other stakes of smaller but nevertheless considerable value but he says announce ¬ ment was made of the big purse and his association is prepared to go through with its original plans He may find that siz ¬ able purses and a good program of minor etakes will balance his card cardSaratogas Saratogas meeting will be under way for a third of its period before the annual yearl ¬ ing sales get under way but in the mean ¬ time many of the embryo stars of the future will be placed on exhibition at E J Tran ¬ ters paddocks so that the discriminating horsemen may look them over and take their pick Nine nights have been set aside for the yearling auctions and with more than forty sold each night the number offered will be in the neighborhood of 400 This is not as many as were sold several years ago when any sort of yearling commanded r000 and with the sport riding the crest of an expansion wave a higher average may be expected As has been the custom for some years the large consignments will be offered on Friday nights Arthur B Hancock has the first Friday which is August 10 when he will dispose of the colts and fillies he has bred and developed at his Claiborne Farm in Kentucky and Ellerslie Farm in Virginia The ensuing Friday night Phil T Chinn will offer the youngsters he has assembled He has not as many yearlings as has been his custom to sell so he will divide the nights program with Duntreath Farm Glen Riddle Farm Harrie B Scott and Thomas C Mc ¬ Dowell Should he come back to his old status Colonel Chinn may have that night to himself in the future futureThe The breeders are asking themselves and anyone who they think might know if there will be any new buyers in the market this year We havent heard of any but there should be with racing expanding in virgin territory such as New England Texas and California New owners have come into the sport especially in Texas and it will not be surprising if one or two persons from the Lone Star State usurp the spot ¬ light at the Saratoga sales The established sportsman of wealth even though he breeds his own thoroughbreds will be on the look ¬ out for outside blood as formerly So all in all the yearling consignors may look forward to higher prices Dublin Taylor leading jockey in point of winning mounts has been put to the test since arriving at Arlington Park as he has been called upon to ride against such ca ¬ pable veterans as Sonny Workman Bobby Jones Don Meade Mack Garner Jack Westrope and Eddie Arcaro and the nine ¬ teenyearold Oklahoma lad has come through in satisfactory fashion It may be jin his favor that Taylor beganriding later xin life than is usual as he will not be burned out in such a hurry His principal assets at the moment are coolness and a fancy for saving ground and with experience he will better himself in such departments as start ¬ ing rating and finishing Unfortunately Taylor has large hands and feet usually a sure indication of further growth so his riding career may be limited to a few years
