This bay son of Chicle and Crazy Moon, by Broomstick, scored in five of his eleven starts, including the Juvenile and National Stallion Stakes, but he lost some of the large following he gained in the spring of the season by failing to capture iiny of his five starts from August on. Plat Eye began his career in brilliant fashion, winning a pair of five-furlong sprints at Jamaica in easy fashion. In the first of these he outsprinted Pitter Pat, Sufficient, Moisson and others, and in the second he defeated a field hardly as good. His third start was in the Youthful Stakes and he fin- Jished second back of Angelic, although he might have changed the verdict had his chances not been impaired at the turn into the stretch, when "Duke" Bellizzi fell from Psychic. Bid, which was leading at the time. In three starts at Belmont Park, the Greentree colt swept through them all. In the first he easily stepped away from Gov. Sholtz, St. Bernard and Canterboy, and in the second, the Juvenile, behind him at the end were Psychic Bid, Angelic, Today and others. His winning margin was a half length and he came from behind the pace of Psychic .Bid- to win as the five furlongs straightaway was run in :59. - Plat Eyes triumph in the National Stallion was gained with greater ease, as in stepping the five furlongs in :58 he was able to defeat Psychic Bid by two lengths. The-latter again led during the early stages, but was unable to withstand the bid of the Greentree representative. Others in the beaten field of the National Stallion were Young Native, St. Bernard and other promising youngsters. Given a layoff during the remainder of June and July, Plat Eye resumed campaigning in August at Saratoga, the Saratoga Special offering his first chance at six furlongs. He flashed his usual early speed to hold sway until well into the stretch but he could not stand off Boxthorns closing rush and lost the verdict by a length. Three weeks later Plat Eye came back in the Hopeful Stakes at six and one-half furlongs but he probably wasnt quite tightened up as he faltered in the stretch after being in a forward position from the start and the finish found him well back as Psychic Bid was victorious, with Rosemont second and Esposa third. Then in the Champagne Stakes, Plat Eye showed an even effort in running third back of Balladier and Omaha, the former setting a new track record of 1:16 for the six arid one-half furlongs straightaway in winning. Plat Eye neither faltered nor improved his position through the late stages but he was the top weight of the field with 126 pounds just as he had been in the Hopeful. With a muddy track for the Futurity, the son of Chicle again finished third, tiring slightly near the end after fighting it out for the lead since the beginning. With 125 pounds up he was beaten four and a half lengths for first honors by Chance Sun while Balladier was second. Omaha, Psychic Bid and many other smart-youngsters finished back of him. Plat Eye closed his two-year-old campaign in the Eastern Shore Handicap in which he was unable to get a chance to run in the large field and he was well back at the wire. While Plat Eye gave signs of being a sprinter last year, he is bred to be a first class stayer, being by the Spearmint stallion, Chicle, from a mare by Broomstick with the second dam by Ultimus and the third by "Star Ruby. He must get some of his great speed from Ultimus. At any rate, he is fashionably bred as far as American standards era concerned, combining all of the well known Whitney crosses. His disposition to stop last year may have been caused by his tendency to bear over towards the rail, which trainer William Brennan undoubtedly has tried and is trying to correct. 1
