PEKIN bettered his position steadily after the opening eighth, wore down the leaders when reaching the home stretch, then continued strongly under stout handling and just lasted long enough. EVENING CHIMES, permitted to drop out of contention after breaking forwardly, circled her field and closed full of run after losing considerable ground. ARCTIC LAND showed good speed in the footing to race VERITAS into submission, saved ground and held on well when put to a drive. BEAU GOVANS finished stoutly under weak handling. LUCKY TURN, badly outpaced for the first three-quarters, worked her way into contention when reaching the final turn, closed courageously after being straightened into the home stretch and was up in the last fifteen yards. ADVOCATE JUNIOR sprinted into a commanding lead while under steadying restraint, -was kept in the better footing, but quit suddenly during the closing eighth. VOLGADALE raced into a position in the first flight when leaving the back stretch and came courageously for the final drive after being inclined to bear to the inside during the final drive. MISS FIREFLY, suited by the footing and going forwardly in the early stages, responded willingly when reaching the home stretch, wore down CLEAR KNIGHT and held DONA DULCIN safe. The latter moved up resolutely to engage the pacemakers when entering the home stretch, but could not stay with the winner when the real issue came. PRETTY WISE was under stout pressure throughout and had no excuse. FOREIGN LADY broke slowly and could never reach a contending position. ONEILL raced evenly. CLEAR KNIGHT and ROMOLA raced themselves into submission setting the early pace and both quit badly. OUR MAE moved up fast rounding the turn, but could not threaten after reaching the homo stretch. BASQUINE saved ground the entire journey, but could not reach the two leaders in the closing issue. TRI5TRAP, rated back of TW1DGETS in the early racing, went up on the inside on the final turn, struck deep footing, then tired during the final drive. HIDDEN LORE went to the outside of the field nearing -the home stretch to gain a slight lead, but faltered in the closing drive. POST BRIGADE was unable to engage the leaders.
