HAVRE OPENS ON MONDAY Maryland Racing Scene Shifts to the Harford Association Track. Fifteen Named for Harford Handicap, Principal Attraction of Splendid Inaugural Day Program. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 13. The racing scene in Maryland shifts to the Havre de Grace course of the Harford Association Monday and an elaborate program of seven races will be offered with the -Harford Handicap, a six furlongs dash, as the special of the day. This is a prize of ,500 added and fifteen have accepted the weights assigned by handicapper Charles J. McLennan. The Elk Ridge- Purse, also a six furlong dash, but confined to the three-year-olds, is second in importance. It promises a field of eight rather smart ones calculated to furnish an excellent contest. Of these, Pat Nashs Shandon Farm Stable is represented by the pair named for the Southern Maryland Handicap today, Ever-gold and Dust Girl. The Howe Stable has a team in Nautch and Only One and A. G. Vanderbilt has Dreel and Identify to bear his silks. Silent Shot, winner of the Harford last spring, will again try for the prize under the silks of J. E. Hughes and F. Spatola has a worthy representative in Wise Prince. Others of the company are Legume, Speed-j more, Star Porter, Chatmoss, All Forlorn, Wise Sister and Red Wagon. Each of these is well suited over the six-furlong distance and most of those named have already had a degree of seasoning by racing. Legume is the only one named for the Elk Ridge Purse that is also engaged in the Harford Handicap and it is not known in which he will start but his winning chances are naturally brighter in the three-year-old dash, where he is only opposed by those of his own age. For that running the Vanderbilt silks are represented by City Slicker, a winner at Bowie, and Bachelor Dinner, which disappointed in the running of the Rowe Memorial. It appears certain that Bachelor Dinner will improve over his only showing of the season and with City Slicker as running mate it is expected the pair will go to the post favorites. The two-year-old event of the opening dash invites maidens and a limit field of fourteen has been named and the other four races are under claiming conditions. This makes the card a varied one and with favorable weather and track conditions, the opening of the second Maryland meeting of the year will surely be a big one. At Havre de Grace, as everywhere else, trainers have been handicapped to a degree by the late spring and the continued rains that made the going deep, but for a considerable time various of the largest stables and some of the best horses intended for the spring campaign have been galloping regularly and as the meeting progresses they will be brought to the races. Edward J. Burke, the genial manager of Havre de Grace, has declared against the use of the "Daily Double" for his meeting and that mode of combination wagering which was so popular at the Bowie meeting will not be available to the patrons. The Burke contention is that the offering of a double on the first and third races, as is the usual custom, affects the market on the first, second and third races. For the past week there have been various shipments of horses from Bowie to Havre de Grace and it is natural to expect that horses seasoned at the meeting which came to a conclusion today will have some slight advantage in condition over those that have not yet been to the races. The usual train arrangements have been made for the handling of patrons from Philadelphia, Wilmington, Baltimore and Washington and the success that attended the Bowie racing under the most adverse weather conditions gives promise for a big season at the Harford County course.
